Right-hand boring bar (RH):

  • This is the most common type.
  • The cutting edge faces towards the headstock (where the chuck is) of the lathe.
  • Material is cut as the spindle rotates in a clockwise direction (when viewed from the headstock).

Left-hand boring bar (LH):

  • Less common, but useful in specific situations.
  • The cutting edge faces away from the headstock.
  • Requires running the lathe in counter-clockwise direction to achieve proper cutting.
  • LH boring bars are sometimes used for Boring close to a shoulder (the edge of a machined surface)Reducing chatter, a vibration that can affect surface finish
