Top 5 Insights from the RISE Star Ratings Master Class at Omni Scottsdale

From the Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia with Camelback Mountain in the backdrop, I was fortunate to participate in the RISE Star Ratings Master Class Conference.

Here are my top 5 takeaways:

1?? The Innovation Journey to Consistently High Star Ratings:

Peet van Biljon (Georgetown University) and Rex Wallace (Rex Wallace Consulting, LLC) delivered the most informative presentation on innovation I’ve ever attended. They explored the link between innovation capabilities and Star Ratings, emphasizing that adaptability is key in an evolving Stars environment. They also shared a multiphase maturity model for innovation. Be sure to connect with Rex Wallace or check out Peet van Biljon’s recent publication, Innovation for Value and Mission: An Introduction to Innovation Management and Policy.

2?? Mastering CAHPS, HOS, and HEI:

Raheleh Barznia, Senior Manager of Clinical Quality Member Experience at Blue Shield of California, explained the importance of focusing on both short- and long-term strategies for member experience and CAHPS improvement. She highlighted how Star Ratings 2027 will be significantly impacted by HOS measures and shared strategies for ongoing HOS measurement improvement. Raheleh outlined how to identify targeted members with HEI social risk factors, reduce disparities, and why this plays a critical part in any health plan’s successful Star strategy. Connect with Raheleh Barznia to learn more.

3?? Building Healthy Communities Through Health Equity:

Darren Wethers, MD, CPE (Wethers Consulting) moderated a heartfelt session featuring panelists, Traco Matthews, MBA (Kern Health Systems), Nikki Hungate, MS, MHA (FarmboxRx), and Tina Dueringer, BSN, RN, CCM, PCC (Dueringer Advisors Inc). They shared how they serve underserved communities through outreach, engagement, and culturally and linguistically appropriate care. Reach out to Dr. Wethers to learn more about integrating the Health Equity Index into your health plan.

4?? Success in Charting a Path to Five Stars:

Stephen Winn, Senior Director Quality at Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group | Kaiser Permanente, shared key strategies for improving HEDIS Star performance, including triple-weighted PCR interventions, provider engagement tactics that improve patient care, close care gaps, and achieve numerator compliance. Connect with Stephen Winn to gain more insights.

5?? The Importance of Survey Oversampling:

From Rex Wallace Consulting, LLC, Heidi Salerno and Ryan Bernstein reviewed in detail the concept of survey over-sampling—what it is, when to use it, and how to adjust strategies based on performance impacts. Reach out to Heidi Salerno for a deeper dive.

I’m excited to apply these valuable insights in my work at Hallmark Business Connections. Let’s connect if you want to discuss any of these strategies further!?
