A Half Second Too Slow in the Business

A Half Second Too Slow in the Business

“Because in either game - life or football - the margin for error is so small. I mean, one half a step too late or too early and you don't quite make it.”-??????? Tony D’Amato (Al Pacino) in Any Given Sunday.

On Monday I shared how in an NFL match between Chicago and Washington on Sunday came down to a “Hail Mary” miracle pass with 2 seconds left that shocked Chicago and gave Washington an exhilarating win.

Since then it transpired that one of the Chicago defenders when the play was snapped had his back to the action because he was facing the crowd and clowning around.

It took him 3 to 4 seconds to realise the play had started.

And then he ran like crazy to catch up.. he did get there and even tipped the ball.

But by clowning around he was “a half step too late”

Ultimately, he was out of position and so the Washington Receiver was wide open in the back of the end zone and able to catch the tipped pass and score.

And it helped cost Chicago the game.

I talked about how you don’t want to rely on a Hail Mary when it comes to one day successfully passing down or selling your business.

But the temptation is too distract yourself with the day to day or even penny pinching and lose sight of the opportunity playing out around you.

I had a client who was looking to retire and sell her business.

We had found a seller at her price what was $1 million higher than what she was previously offered.

However, we had a problem which I pointed out to her.

Her finance guy was a disaster.

She didn’t listen because he was cheap and it made no sense to pay more for a real professional.

After all, the finance guy just checks a box… right?

Long story short..? His incompetence sabotaged the deal during due diligence.

He was too slow and inept and the buyer lost patience and the opportunity went away.

A bitter pill to swallow but like the lesson the halpless Chicago defender learned…

Never take for granted what will pay off at the end.

Often for a life changing amount.

Which is why I created Sophiall and its Socratic Success System so you don’t’ end up a half step too short or a half second too slow.
