Families Forced to Choose Between Education and Basic Needs as Gender Inequality Persists

The current state of education in Haiti is alarming, with a significant portion of the population living in poverty and unable to provide their children with the resources they need to succeed in school. According to Haiti Libre, 90% of school in Haiti is private, and people in the community of Ouanaminthe find them very expensive. The rising cost of living has made it increasingly challenging for families to afford school fees, books, uniforms, and transportation. According to our scholarship assessment in the community of Ouanaminthe, Haiti, the average cost of tuition, books, and uniforms for a year of schooling in Haiti is approximately $650. This may seem like a small amount, but it is a significant financial burden for families living under a dollar a day. Families are now facing choosing to eat or sending their kids to school.

Parents who can pay a year choose to send the boy to school, assuming that the girl may make a mistake and get pregnant; they will become just moms, which is considered a waste of money. Gender inequality is pervasive in Haiti, and girls face unique challenges that often make it difficult for them to access education. Menstruation is another significant issue that impacts the cost of education for families. Parents may have to choose between purchasing menstrual products for their daughters and feeding them, as a woman uses 3 packets of Kotex, which comes to be 2.5 dollars for the month. This is a difficult choice that no parent should have to make, but unfortunately, it is a reality for many families in Haiti. Due to these challenges, we see a gender gap in education, with more boys attending school than girls.

The recent surge in gas prices, as it is priced at $8 per liter whereas a family lives under $1 a day, has further exacerbated the situation, making it more challenging for students and teachers to commute to and from school. The lack of resources and quality education in impoverished areas perpetuates the cycle of poverty, making it difficult for children to break free and reach their full potential.

Womenful Voice acknowledges the pressing requirement to facilitate education for Haitian children. Our mission is to make a positive impact on the lives of Haitian children. To achieve this, we have initiated a scholarship project to aid ten young girls who are in elementary to middle school, have single mothers, are orphans, or are child slaves. Our budget of $6500 shall cover the cost of uniforms, tuition, and books. Womenful Voice believes in good management of resources to ensure project success. Additionally, these children will also be involved in the process of planting and nurturing trees as a way to give back to the environment.
