Hadid’s Palestine backlash shows the importance of identity and we celebrate equality accomplishments of the 21st century… this week in social change

Happy Wednesday Thred fam, our weekly newsletter is back with the DL on all things Gen Z and social change. ??

You know the drill by now, two feature pieces are headed your way. But first, lets get into a rapid-fire recap of the week’s events.

We’ll start with a rare ecological positive: the 129bn PPE face masks we get through every month may soon have an ecological way to be disposed of – by being mixed into an entirely new form of reinforced concrete! Two birds one stone, am I right? [Sigh]

While one form of plastic waste is now a ways closer to being dealt with, however, we’ve also examined the $283bn bottled water industry and how its pesky marketing techniques exploit our health concerns to thrive. ??

Elsewhere, our resident ocean obsessive, Jess, speaks on the distinct lack of legal measures in place to protect the high seas and its biodiversity, we discuss how treaties continue to scupper our transition away from fossil fuels, and our expert on all things Africa, Derrick, explains the escalating chaos unfolding in the DRC over goldmine territories. ???

Truthfully, it’s not been the most encouraging week news wise, and we can only apologise. Then again, the world is far from sunshine and rainbows atm… unless you’re talking about temperamental, volatile climate shifts that could’ve been prevented if only we’d listened back in 1977!

Okay, let’s move on.

If that overview has sent you spiralling, thankfully, there are plenty of uplifting stories on Thred too. Click here and get scrolling to find them.??

Without further ado, though, it’s time to move onto the headline pieces, and who doesn’t love them some celebrity content?

Our supremely talented Flo Bellinger has done a deep dive into the backlash supermodel Bella Hadid has received for vocalising her support for Palestine.

Flo uses the 25-year-old’s strife as a case point to highlight the importance of identity and one’s sense of self above circumstantial factors.

It may come as a surprise that Hadid is ethnically Middle Eastern. The disparity between her idolised appearance in the West, and the vitriols of hate targeted at her Arab community is something Hadid has discussed at length.

Bella and sister Gigi have been open about the strong relationships they hold with their father and his Palestinian family. ‘I know my family enough; I know my history enough. And that should be enough,’ Hadid told the Rep.

Despite the physical disconnect Hadid feels toward her Palestinian family, and the sense of loss she harbours for her Arab heritage, Bella’s vocal stance on Palestinian suffering is a mark of her tenacious sense of identity, an identity that is defined by far more than appearance or place.

Head to the website for the full story. It’s pretty compelling stuff, if we do say ourselves. ??

Speaking of important ideals, the office celebrated National Women’s Equality Day last Friday! ♀?

Originally recognised as the day the US constitution barred discrimination against voting rights based on biological sex, it now means so much more to people and we continue to applaud progressive victories every year.

Jess has highlighted four of what we consider major milestones since the turn of the 21st century. From education and business, to sports and global politics, she outlines some big markers of improvement – and identifies where there’s still work to be done to attain real equality.

It’s a comprehensive piece that is equally informative and inspiring, and we owe it to ourselves to understand where we’re currently at in the grand scheme of things. ??

‘All wins so far, no matter how small, should continue to act as fuel for women and girls everywhere to know that what was once thought impossible can – and hopefully will – be achieved,’ says Jess. We’re not crying, you are!

Go and read the full story. And, until next time, keep shaping the world Zers.
