HackXmas - Charity Hackathon
Meetup groups React Copenhagen, ngCopenhagen and CopenhagenJS organised a non-profit mini hackathon HackXmas, in order to help solve challenges that social workers of SOS Children's Village have in their daily work. Hackathon took place on 9. December in Halvandet, Copenhagen, and I attended it together with Sam Ciaramilaro, Yuri Tymoshchuk and my wife Helena Vuksic.
SOS Children's Villages is global organisation working to protect and care for children who have lost parental care, or who stand at risk of losing it. This organisation has more than 6000 social workers that work with children in more than 137 countries and territories.
One of challenges of current system this organisation uses is that programme staff spend too much time for collecting rather than using data to improve programmes, so my team focused on creating solution that could improve data usage.
In order to provide an overview of family strengths, relationships, risks and needs, social workers perform whole family assessment.
Solution we built represented family assessment data as timeline, in order to help social workers identify the needs of families with multiple problems. We built Laravel based backend application and React based frontend application to display the data.
This was first hackathon my wife Helena attended and it was great fun for her. She is social pedagogue, so it was great to have a team member that have experience in the field.
Special thanks for this hackathon goes out to organisers who made it possible! Thanks for reading!
So great to get your ideas and thank you to Microsoft for supporting our work in SOS B?rnebyerne!
