Hackathons, those intense gatherings of creative minds, have become emblematic of the collaborative spirit driving innovation in the tech industry. These events showcase the remarkable potential of teamwork, highlighting how a group of individuals with diverse skills and backgrounds can come together to achieve extraordinary feats. Michael Burton, CEO of Binary Tech, recently appeared on the QPS Benchmarking Podcast and shared his hackathon experiences, in particular Hackagong at the University of Wollongong.
Hackathons are not just for engineers; they welcome anyone with a passion for problem-solving and innovation. As Burton points out, “Anyone, even if you're in marketing or you're an accountant or something, you could still go to a hackathon and join a team." This inclusivity sets the stage for a dynamic collaboration where each member contributes their unique expertise towards a common goal.
The timeframe of a hackathon is often limited, typically spanning around 30 hours. Within this compressed schedule, teams tackle challenges or pursue their own projects with relentless focus and determination. Reflecting on his participation in the Hackagong event in 2014, Burton recalls the exhilarating atmosphere of creativity and productivity. "We built this whole system in 30 hours with a team of four of us," he recounts. Despite the tight deadline, the team managed to develop a sophisticated internet-connected chicken hatchery, complete with temperature sensors, a user interface, and cloud connectivity.
One of the defining characteristics of a successful hackathon team is a shared vision. Burton emphasises the importance of alignment towards a common goal, stating, "If a team actually understands what they're working towards and has buy-in into that vision... it's 100x in what can be accomplished." This unity of purpose fuels motivation and propels the team towards unprecedented levels of productivity and innovation.
The experience of winning the hackathon served as a pivotal moment for Burton, solidifying his commitment to entrepreneurial endeavours. "My team won that hackathon, which was fantastic," he recalls with enthusiasm. This triumph not only validated their hard work but also underscored the immense potential of teamwork in achieving ambitious objectives.
