The key to developing and perfecting any new skill is consistency. Easier said than done, right? We all live such busy lives that it can be hard to add yet another thing into our daily routines.?But what if there was a way to make yourself?want?to practice?
There is.?And all you need is a calendar, a red marker, and some advice from Jerry Seinfeld.
To become a better comedian, Seinfeld knew he had to sit down and write jokes. Lots of them. The best way to do this, he thought, would be to make sure that he wrote something, no matter how stupid or little, every single day.
Here’s what he did.
He got a large wall calendar that had the entire year on one page and hung it on a wall he saw every day. The first day he wrote, he marked the day with a big red X. The following day he did the same thing. Pretty soon those Xs began form a long red chain. And he liked seeing this chain. The job then became?not to break the chain.
This way of holding yourself accountable worked for Jerry and it can work for you too! You can use a wall calendar like Jerry did (it really helps to see it every day) or there are countless apps that will send you reminders and keep track of your streak. After the first few consecutive days you won’t want to let that streak die! And if you miss a day, that’s ok, just start again and see if you can beat your last one.
So get out there and start marking Xs. And remember,?don’t break the chain!
