H2-Oh No! Why Splashing Water on Your Face Isn’t a Skincare Strategy

If you believe NFL players are just focused on the field and totally skip skin and self-care, you’re in for a wake-up call! Let me spill the tea: A quick splash of water isn't cutting it for that fresh-faced look!"

At Urban Beauty Source, we’re thrilled to focus on men’s grooming this February as we explore its cultural connections, demonstrating that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to being well-groomed. Our mission is to inspire our community by highlighting diverse perspectives while reflecting our core values of creativity, empowerment, and inclusivity.

But before we get into the juicy insights we uncovered during our research; can we just take a moment to celebrate the excitement of Sunday’s Super Bowl 59? From the players' pre-game fashion walks—major shoutout to Jawaan Taylor, Nazeeh Johnson, DeVonta Smith, and of course, Jalen Hurts, who all brought their A-game—there was so much to admire! Cheers to their bold fits, killer accessories, and flawless grooming, not to mention that electrifying halftime show with K-DOT. Seriously, what a night! But with all that perfection, I couldn't help but wonder: how do these athletes mentally and physically prepare for such a monumental event?

What we found made me breathe a bit easier. It turns out that the night before, NFL players prioritized their self-care. They eat well, settle into their hotel rooms, ensure they get ample sleep, adhere to curfews, and review game films. Their game-day meals often include:

  • A balanced dinner aligned with their training diet
  • Casein-rich snacks like Greek yogurt
  • A small serving of carbs before bedtime
  • Sleep-friendly foods like cherries
  • Plenty of water

Sounds like self-care to me, Gentlemen! Unfortunately, I couldn't dive deep into their actual skincare routines, but I did finally stumble upon a video from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In this quick video, a reporter asked the players about their grooming routines, the answers were hilarious. Responses ranged from "What routine?" to "I just use whatever shower gel is around." But the ones that made me clutch my pearls were, "I drink plenty of water and wash my face with water." I nearly fainted! ?? Thankfully, Sterling Shepard stood out by admitting he uses his girlfriend's products and is working on his sunscreen game.

Now, Gentlemen, we MUST address this "water-only" strategy (which isn't a good one BTW). Hydration is essential for our overall health, but water alone won’t effectively cleanse your skin. It lacks the necessary components to remove dirt and oil. A quality cleanser with surfactants acts as your skin's defensive line, tackling the grime that water simply can't handle.

So, What Should a Solid Skincare Routine Look Like?

  1. Cleansing
  2. Treatment
  3. Hydration
  4. Sunscreen

?And hey, there’s absolutely no shame in borrowing from your girl’s routine if it helps elevate your skincare game! But fear not—we’re here to help you find the right products tailored just for you.

Wrapping It Up

Let's take cues from our favorite NFL players (minus the “water-only” skincare) and adopt a solid skin and self-care routine that helps us look and feel sharp.

Remember, our mission at Urban Beauty Source is rooted in The Urban Beauty Code, where we celebrate authenticity, promote self-care, and create inclusive solutions for our community. We hope our values resonate in all we create and showcase.

I love this! Sometimes it’s really hard to get men to take their skin seriously. But they are no different than women. We all have skin and we all should take care of it. I make sure my sons wash their face and have a moisturizer. A very basic routine for them but a routine nonetheless because they’re only 15 and 18. Great article!
