Playing with data
“We can now really play with data and gain new insights”
Just a few last tests and the BI Analytics Platform (BIAP) is ready for use. The platform enables us to rapidly extract valuable information from data.
Business Intelligence means gathering data within a company or organization, in order to transform this to valuable information. In our case we already did this within the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). But soon the BI Analytics Platform (BIAP) will be added. Peter Borst, Senior Application Consultant at ICT&I, explains: “The beauty of this BIAP is that it is very easy to start a project. The data quality does not need to meet the standards that we have set for EDW. It also enables us to pull data from external sources, like weather, traffic information or other things that influence public transport. This enables you to really play with data, and gain surprising and creative insights.”
Impact
At this moment the new platform is being put to the test. One of the testers is Natalie in ‘t Veld, business analyst at Marketing & Transport development. She tells us “I am exploring the results of two projects. One is about stationary times, here we analyze the time needed between opening and closing the tram doors under many different entry-regimes. By comparing these, we can evaluate exactly what the impact is of the action we take on the streets. In the second project, we are analyzing check-in data. These are already loaded into EDW, but this only provides standardized reports. In the BIAP we can now see how temporary traffic adjustments or summer-storms influence passenger behavior.”
Looking ahead
Within a few weeks the entire marketing team will be able to use the BIAP. The ‘old’ EDW will remain operational, as we will still be required to officially report certain results, for which the EDW is very well suited. Natalie: “The EDW tells us exactly what happened. In addition to this, our new platform enables us to look ahead, and make data driven decisions. For our department that is truly amazing, it enables us to support all our activities. This will bring us much joy.”
BIAP
The Biap is a collaborative project involving the departments of Marketing, Transport development, Functional Application Management and ICT&I, and the external party PA Consulting.
