Gurkul Education is an ancient system of learning that has been keeping Indian culture alive for centuries.

Throughout ancient times, India has had a strong legacy in the field of learning and education. People from various countries, such as Europe, the Middle East, and Portugal, came India to receive a good education.

What exactly is a Gurukul System?

It was a residential schooling system that originated in the Indian subcontinent around 5000 BC. It was more common during the Vedic period, when pupils were taught a variety of subjects as well as how to live a cultured and disciplined life.

Western establishments like Oxford, Yale, Cambridge, Harvard, etc. have been sanctified for their education and guidance for the past two centuries. However, a thousand years prior to the worldwide colonization of Europeans, Asian centers of learning such as Nalanda Mahavihara of Magadha were renowned for their academic excellence.?

Founded in 427 CE, Nalanda is Who can forget Nalanda, whose red-brick ruins at Nalanda, Bihar are all that remain of one of the ancient worlds greatest institutions of learning?

Nalanda University, located in Bihar, India, is an ancient seat of learning that has been renowned for its excellence since the 5th century. It was considered to be the world's first residential university during its heyday and was home to some of the most brilliant minds of its time. It attracted students from all over Asia and beyond and was a sort of medieval Ivy League institution. A place where knowledge and wisdom flourished, it was a beacon of light in the dark ages.

The university had nine stories high buildings with lecture halls, meditation centers and libraries with hundreds of manuscripts on Buddhist teachings. Nalanda University's fame spread far and wide due to its great teachers who taught various subjects such as philosophy, grammar, logic, astronomy, medicine and much more. It was a place where knowledge seekers could find answers to life's questions without any prejudice or biasness. Unfortunately it met with destruction in 1193 by invading armies but still remains an iconic symbol of India's glorious past.

aws in the present education system

Unfortunately, the above concept has disappeared and the modern system of education brought to India in the year 1835 by Lord Macauley is all about rat race to be ahead of others. There is a total absence of personality development, creation of moral conscience and ethical training.?

?

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is the result of years of continuous deliberation, debate, discussions, and consultations involving people from all over the country, with input from best practices from around the world. The strategy paper aims for India to restore its place as a world leader in the next few days, with the initiative of Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal (BSM) emphasizing the resurgence of the Bharatiya system of education with a focus on Indian culture, values, languages, and traditions.

?

I am writing this article after being inspired and amazed by the thought and efforts of Aniruddha Bansod who is attempting to revitalize this ancient education system by teaching underprivileged students how to build mud houses and many other constructs so that they can assist civil engineers and be the future leaders.

When the Lend A Hand India team visited Hunar Gurukul, we saw the impact of the art of thinking in revitalising the education system.

Overall, the Hunar Gurukul is a great initiative that provides underprivileged students with the opportunity to gain employable skills and become self-reliant.

They provide carpentry, masonry, and bamboo work lessons to help pupils become self-sufficient, as well as being an excellent resource for developing professionals of their own kind.?

Thank you Prasad Thete for the conversation we had and answering my questions
