Here we are 1st month of the new financial year almost finished. Do you have a plan? No, the answer isn't, "yes, in my head". A plan is something that you can audit, you can share, you can get input on and in! It need not be long and complex! Think it, capture, audit regularly - know you are going where you planned - don't look back too late!
Contrary to what I might of thought 25 years ago, it does need to start with a Vision! That Vision is something you can share and agree with your team, suppliers and everyone. It's your beacon, it sets the raison d'etre. t needs to belong to everyone!
You need to know the financials, what is break even point, "what MUST I/we" do to achieve that? From that everything else flows.
CASE STUDY: In the last 2 months I have lost two new clients. We were able to establish quite clearly the need they had for some external thinking and the addition of external experience but, they just were not ready to take the journey. One dispensed the current 'consultant' to take me on. The other has a family member partner but does the majority of hard lifting herself.
The people are great, I know their industry and I know I can add value but the fear of what could be seen as 'losing contrtol' or 'admitting to not being able to do it' overtook them.
In both cases I preempted us working together with the codicil that they had to be ready and open for the process. In truth, no one ever knows until the process starts and it can be confronting. When they say something can't be done and we say, lets see if it can't, in fact if it can. So the old adage, 'if nothing changes nothing changes' is right on!
Unfortunately people hardly ever count the cost of 'lost opportunity'. I have lost count at the number of companies I have worked with where we have blown out of the water their forecast sales of margin or both. They had their mind on something like a 'cost of living' increase, maybe even an increase above that - trepidation and uncertainty. In my experience unless the business already controls the majority of the market, there is always space to grow, much more than CPI.
