UAE-based executive recruiter Peter Greaves set up IES HR Consultants four years ago. He presents a tempting case for CFOs thinking of a move to the Middle East.

“Over the past year we have experienced increasing demand for internationally disciplined CFO’s, in the Gulf, predominantly by family groups.

Why? Well, many organisations never really restructured after the crash of 2008. Now, they need to raise capital at a time when the banks are lending very selectively. With more regulation imposed on the banks, we see this challenge only escalating.

Forward thinking firms are looking to hire CFO’s who will apply international standards of corporate governance. Where a firm has a finance team capable of taking care of the core accounting, the CFO can focus on driving it strategically to prepare detailed and transparent reports for the banks. The role of a top CFO today is far more commercial than in the past. Often seen as the Deputy CEO, they will work strategically to raise the organisation’s profile and are often financially incentivised to assist companies into profitability.

There are not hundreds of job opportunities here, but there are some. Gulf families prefer to hire professionals with some regional experience - technically competent yes, but also with diplomacy and sensitive to cultural differences. This region is still awash with private cash and companies need to hire professionals to take their business to the next level, especially in growing sectors like healthcare and education.”
