In a recent dialogue, Dr. H.G. Koshia, Commissioner of the Gujarat Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA), shared the administration's relentless efforts to enhance the safety and efficacy of pharmaceuticals. Under his leadership, the FDCA has made significant strides in augmenting manpower, combating counterfeit drugs, and ensuring regulatory compliance.?

Strengthening Manpower:?

Gujarat FDCA has recently sanctioned 35 additional posts, including joint commissioners, deputy commissioners, drug inspectors, and allied staff. This expansion is set to bolster the capabilities of the existing 1529 personnel, ensuring stringent regulatory standards are upheld.?

Expansion of Testing Facilities:?

With the state government's approval, a state-of-the-art lab in Surat and another planned facility in Rajkot will soon join the existing lab in Vadodara. These strategic expansions aim to create a robust network of three labs, enhancing testing capabilities and ensuring the quality of pharmaceutical products across Gujarat.?

Crackdown on Counterfeit Drugs:?

In a series of coordinated raids, Gujarat FDCA has seized fake drugs worth over Rs. 1.75 crores. The crackdown uncovered a sophisticated network involved in the illegal production and distribution of substandard antibiotics. This operation serves as a stern warning to those engaged in illicit activities, reaffirming the FDCA's commitment to public health.?

Regulatory Compliance and Enforcement:?

The FDCA has taken decisive action against 11 Gujarat-based companies for non-compliance with norms. Collaborating with the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), these actions include the cancellation of licenses and halting production due to quality concerns and poor compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).?

Capacity Building and Global Collaboration:?

The Gujarat FDCA's ongoing collaboration with the US FDA, facilitated by US Ambassador Eric M Garcetti, aims to equip Indian drug regulators with enforcement and regulatory compliance expertise. Since 2008, the US FDA-Gujarat FDCA Bilateral Regulatory Forum has been a platform for training, networking, and knowledge sharing, enhancing the production of quality medicines in Gujarat.?
