How should you talk to someone with dementia?
Interactions take patience and sensitivity. "Dementia is a much more challenging illness to care for than almost any other medical or psychiatric illness," says?Brent Forester, coauthor of?The Complete Family Guide to Dementia, in?The New York Times.
How can you relax without worry this summer?
"Being kind to others is one of the best ways to curb racing thoughts when you’re trying to relax, says?Susan Pollak, author of?Self-Compassion for Parentson?Yahoo.com. "Whether you offer someone a compliment or buy a friend coffee, generosity reduces your stress levels—and when you’re kind to others, it’s easier to be kind to yourself."
How should kids spend their summer? Not in AP classes.
Ellen Braaten, author of?Bright Kids Who Couldn’t Care Less, argues in?WBUR’s Cognoscenti?that parents should "build plenty of space into the [summer] to do nothing much at all. That’s when kids are more likely to pick up a book, fiddle with dad’s old bass guitar or practice hitting a tennis ball against the garage door. These seemingly mindless activities help kids find the things that add meaning to their lives."
How can insights from attachment theory transform our relationships?
Sue Johnson, author of?Attachment Theory in Practice, joins Rick Hanson on the?Being Well podcast?to discuss how attachment theory provides a map for understanding relationships, the challenges of making skills learned in therapy stick, and the role of vulnerability in creating authentic and fulfilling relationships.
Check out our new interview with?Charles Barrett, author of?Social Justice in Schools.
