Guiding Principles for Influence (1.2)

Guiding Principles for Influence (1.2)

In my first post on this topic (https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/guiding-principles-influence-11-sloan-newman-ma-msc), I shared some principles that were some basic insights that you could use in everyday life. However, these two are more like, what I wish I'd known. I have found out the hard way from watching myself, friends and family make these basic mistakes.

  1. “Kid, you can screw everything else up but don’t get client or company name wrong. Everything else can be salvaged” – This is absolutely crucial. With a name like Sloan, which has various interpretations, like 'Sloane' in the UK, which can be unflattering, it's important to be mindful. I understand the frustration of having your name misspelled or mispronounced. My father used to emphasize that the ultimate mistake when dealing with people is getting their names or their company names wrong. This not only shows a lack of attention but also gives the impression that they are not being heard, and nothing is more off-putting than that.
  2. Only give them the basics – Man, I love smart people; they captivate me with their thought processes and their ability to deconstruct problems to gain a comprehensive understanding. While I don't consider myself brilliant, I do see myself as clever. I can perceive, comprehend, and execute solutions effectively. However, a common pitfall I've observed in many brilliant people is their tendency to over-explain and provide exhaustive answers when asked a question, even when it's unnecessary. Most listeners or questioners simply seek assurance that a solution exists. I often respond with the most concise answer to gauge my audience's interest and comprehension before delving into further details. I'll elaborate on this point in my next statement. In essence, stick to the essentials (KISS definitions); people wouldn't seek your opinion if they didn't believe you had thoroughly explored all aspects of the solution.

Good insight Sloan Newman, MA/MSc. The name is always a challenge for me. My go to on new names is to write it out 5 times, reading it and writing it embed it in my mind. Also love the Sumo photo that was a fun NTT Ltd. project we did. #NTTPromos #PromosEngage

Thank you for this post, Sloan. So glad you noted getting the spelling right for both company name and person. It is important. As for #2 (KISS): I completely agree with this one as well, especially with the words, ‘Questioners simply seek assurance that a solution exists.’ This is going on a sticky note on the edge of my monitor, to constantly remind me. Thank you! And I loved the picture of the plastic sumo. Total clickbait. I couldn’t wait to read your post!
