Guiding the next generation: The role of mentorship in software development
In software development, mentorship can shape careers, drive innovation, and support business success. At Propel Tech, we understand the critical role mentoring plays in empowering the next generation of developers while enriching the professional lives of experienced team members.
We spoke with Ben Hopper , seasoned software development team lead, and Arjun Krishnan , one of our graduate software developers, to discover the many benefits and some of the challenges of mentoring - from both sides.
A Journey of growth and collaboration
Ben: “I’ve had the privilege of being guided by skilled professionals throughout my career, and now it’s my turn to give back. Mentoring is about showcasing my skills while bringing the next generation of developers on a fulfilling learning journey.”
Arjun “Mentorship helps me identify areas for improvement and view challenges from a fresh perspective. I think it’s the best way to share knowledge and uplift each other, personally and professionally.”
Overcoming challenges together
Ben: “For someone starting out in their career, development can feel like facing a new mountain every day. Having someone beside you, guiding you and sharing lessons learned from their own climb, makes a world of difference. However, it’s important to remember that everyone’s mentoring needs are different. Some prefer to make their own mistakes and in those cases, my role is to support them when they stumble, helping them reflect on what went wrong and how to approach it differently next time.”
Arjun: “Ben reassured me that asking questions is vital for growth. That encouragement helped me feel comfortable seeking guidance, which has accelerated my learning curve.”
Adapting in a remote world
The rise of remote work has reshaped mentoring, but technology has stepped in to bridge the gap. Tools like video conferencing and collaborative platforms allow mentors and mentees to connect effectively despite physical distance.

Ben: “Reading body language remotely can be challenging, but with regular check-ins and open communication, we maintain a strong connection.”
Arjun:“Progress meetings, skill-building sessions, and casual chats are more accessible than ever. They simulate face-to-face interactions, keeping the mentoring relationship dynamic and productive.”
Lessons that resonate beyond the workplace
Arjun: “Whether it’s professional development or personal interests like game development and cloud technologies, learning broadens your perspective. It’s motivated me to keep challenging myself.”
Ben: “Mentoring has taught me not to solve problems for others but to guide them to find their own solutions. It’s a skill that’s impacted my professional and personal life, fostering patience and reflective thinking.”
Important lessons?
Ben: “Effective mentoring starts with training mentors and identifying those eager to learn. It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, it’s about understanding individual needs and tailoring the approach.?
Arjun: “A mentor offers guidance, feedback, and networking opportunities. It’s an invaluable resource for navigating challenges and building confidence.”
