Successful coaching is very beneficial to both parties, the client’s situation improves and the coach feels fulfilment in his/her practice. There are guidelines that coaches are expected to adhere to that show they possess and understand the skills and approaches needed for coaching in today’s society.
1. A coach must first off, meet all ethical guidelines and professional standards and must be able to appropriately apply them at all times during their coaching practice.
2. A coach must be able to reach a mutual agreement with the client that covers all aspects of what is expected from both parties.
3. A coach has to ensure that the client feels like they are in a safe and comfortable environment, with mutual trust and respect for each other.
4. A coach has to have an air of authority that shows off an open, flexible, and confident personality. The client should feel like they are in safe hands.
5. A coach needs to be able to actively listen to everything the client says, and also encourage them to open up more without judgment.
6. A coach must possess the skill of powerful questioning. Questions asked should make it easy for the client to reveal the necessary information needed for positive changes.
7. A coach must be able to communicate effectively, clearly, and appropriately, and also give room for feedback.
8. A coach must be knowledgeable, and solution-oriented. She/he must have access to multiple sources of information that will allow the client to make decisions that are needed for a positive change.
9. A coach must be able to plan and set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relative, and timely.
10. A coach has to be able to manage the progress of clients and also hold them accountable when they fall short.
