Guidelines for Effective Training

Ensuring that your employees have the skills that match their job requirements will allow them to perform at their best. It also demonstrates that you, as their employer, are willing to invest in them. This leads to greater employee satisfaction and, ultimately, greater customer satisfaction.

Based on my experience delivering training in both the Corporate and Academic worlds, here are a few simple guidelines:

  1. Identify the skills (Hard and Soft) that each employee must have in order to perform their roles both effectively and efficiently (see my article on Job Descriptions https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/drew-simons-80000518_job-descriptions-can-be-a-significant-part-activity-7284558796952162304-EQEu?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop).
  2. Work with each employee to identify the skills that are missing and/or need improvement.
  3. Create a training plan that the employee is expected to follow along with measurable outcomes (obtaining a certificate, passing a course, etc.).
  4. Make the training plan part of their performance review. Meet with the employee on a regular basis (part of their monthly/quarterly review?) and discuss their progress.
  5. Allow employees to take the courses in their training plan during their regular business hours. Do not expect employees to take training on their own time.
  6. Pay for the courses that you have included in each employee’s training plan.

Too often, I see companies make the mistake of failing to take training seriously. They view training as an employee perk rather than a corporate imperative. They provide access to courses and expect employees to take courses of interest on their own time. The employer then interprets the lack of participation as an indicator that training is not required.

Having well trained employees will deliver significant benefits to your organization.
