Guided by Service: Andy Champion's Leadership Legacy

What defines a leader? For Andy Champion , it’s a mix of humility, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to serve. This ethos was deeply ingrained in him during his time at Sandhurst, the prestigious British military academy, where the motto "Serve to Lead" became a guiding principle for his life and career.

"You can either let external challenges define you, or you can choose to adapt and grow. Every hardship is an opportunity to innovate and transform"

Andy’s journey into leadership began in the turbulent landscapes of Northern Ireland in the early 90s. Fresh out of university and Sandhurst, he found himself in the midst of a deeply divided society, leading a platoon of 30 men. This was no ordinary leadership test; it was about managing life-and-death situations while fostering understanding and maintaining order in areas where tensions ran high. These early experiences taught Andy the depths of his own resilience and the importance of leading by example. It wasn’t about being the smartest in the room but about creating an environment where his team felt supported and empowered.

Transitioning from the military to the commercial sector, Andy's initial role as a Business Development Representative (BDR) for a sales recruitment company was humbling. He moved from leading large teams in high-stakes environments to making 100 cold calls a day, with no internet to aid his research. This experience grounded him and provided a stark lesson in perseverance and adaptability. He learned that success often comes from the unglamorous, gritty work that builds a solid foundation of experience and understanding.

"The key to true motivation is finding the 'why' behind your actions. Extrinsic rewards fade, but when you uncover what truly drives you, that's when real progress begins."

As he progressed through various leadership roles in companies like Oracle, DocuSign, and now Highspot, Andy applied these lessons. His military background instilled in him a disciplined approach to leadership, emphasizing structured planning and mission clarity. But more importantly, it was his ability to inspire and motivate his teams, to make them believe in their potential and push beyond their limits, that set him apart.

"Successful leadership isn't just about following a system; it's about understanding and connecting with people on a deeper level. Empathy and genuine care can turn a good leader into a great one."

Andy’s story is a powerful reminder that true leadership is not about wielding authority but about serving others. It’s about creating a culture where people are encouraged to grow, take risks, and achieve more than they thought possible. His journey underscores the idea that out of the crucible of personal and professional challenges can emerge the strength and wisdom to lead with empathy and vision.

Thank you for sharing my story Paul. If you'd told me 25 years ago that I'd feature in an article like this, I'd have found it hard to believe. In all honesty, I still do!!!
