Guided by The Gospel - Issue 73 (Humility in Service)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we continue exploring Christian discipleship, today’s focus is on humility in service. Humility is the foundation of Christlike service, reminding us that our purpose is not self-glorification but to glorify God and serve others. Jesus, the Son of God, showed us the ultimate example of humble service when He washed His disciples' feet, demonstrating that true greatness is found in serving others.

In this issue, we’ll reflect on how humility transforms our service and brings us closer to the heart of Christ. Humility isn’t about thinking less of ourselves—it’s about thinking of ourselves less, putting others first as we follow Christ’s example.

Serving in Humility: Following Jesus' Example

In Philippians 2:3-4, we are urged, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Jesus modeled this perfectly, humbling Himself to serve others even though He was deserving of all honor and glory.

As disciples of Christ, we are called to embrace this same humility in our service. Whether in the church, at home, or in our communities, serving in humility means focusing on how we can lift others up, not seeking recognition for ourselves.

How Humility Transforms Our Service

Humility changes the way we serve, shifting our focus from seeking personal praise to glorifying God through our actions. It opens our hearts to serve others with love, patience, and understanding, even when it’s not easy.

1. Humility Makes Us Christlike: As Matthew 20:28 reminds us, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” When we serve humbly, we follow the example of Jesus, who gave Himself for the sake of others.??

2. Humility Brings God's Grace: James 4:6 says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” When we serve with humility, we experience God’s grace in powerful ways, knowing that He is the source of all we do.??

3. Humility Strengthens Relationships: Serving with humility fosters unity and love. It allows us to build stronger relationships as we put the needs of others above our own and work together for the Kingdom of God.

How to Start:

Cultivating humility in service begins with a change in perspective. Here are some practical steps to help you serve with a humble heart:

- Reflect on Jesus’ Example: Spend time in prayer and Scripture, meditating on Jesus’ humility. Ask God to help you follow Christ’s example of selfless service.??

- Serve in Secret: Look for opportunities to serve others without seeking acknowledgment or recognition. Let your service be between you and God.??

- Be Open to Correction: Humility means being teachable. Accept feedback and be willing to grow in areas where God is calling you to improve.??

- Celebrate Others’ Successes: Humility also involves cheering others on. Rejoice in the achievements of those around you without comparing or seeking attention for yourself.

Living a Life of Humble Service

Living a life of humble service is not about diminishing our worth but about exalting Christ in everything we do. As we serve humbly, we reflect the love and grace of God to the world, drawing others to Him. Our service becomes a reflection of Christ’s love, inspiring those around us to follow His example.

Humility in service is a lifelong pursuit, one that brings us closer to Christ and allows us to experience the fullness of His grace. Let us commit to serving others with the same love, grace, and humility that Christ has shown us.

Personal Challenge -??

This week, find one way to serve someone without seeking any recognition. Focus on doing it quietly and joyfully, letting God receive all the glory.

Reader Poll/Question -??

How has humility shaped the way you serve others? I’d love to hear how God is working through you as you seek to serve with a humble heart!

As we continue this series, my prayer is that we would all grow in humility, reflecting Christ’s servant heart in every area of our lives. May God bless you as you serve others with love and humility.

In His grace,??
