Guided by The Gospel - Issue 48 (Money)

"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs." - 1 Timothy 6:10

Bible Explorers,

Welcome to Issue #48 of "Guided by The Gospel." In this edition, we dig into the tricky subject of money and profit from a biblical perspective. Money, a necessary part of our daily lives, can easily become a source of temptation and idolatry. How should Christians approach money? How should we use it responsibly, and how can we avoid the pitfalls of dependency or idolization? Let's explore these questions through the teachings of Scripture.

1. 1 Timothy 6:10 - "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils..."? This verse warns not against money itself, but against the love of money, which can lead to various kinds of evil and spiritual harm.

2. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 - "The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."? The Bible emphasizes the importance of generosity and the concept of stewardship — using money wisely and for the benefit of others.

3. Matthew 6:24 - "No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve God and money."? Jesus teaches that our primary loyalty must be to God, not to wealth. Money should not be the focus of our lives or the source of our security.

4. Proverbs 13:11 - "Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it."? Scripture advocates for honesty and integrity in how we acquire and handle money.

5. Hebrews 13:5 - "Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have..."? The Bible counsels contentment and warns against the endless pursuit of wealth.

Let’s look at a few practical uses and attitudes about money as taught in Scripture:

1. Budgeting and Financial Planning: Apply principles of stewardship by creating and adhering to a budget that reflects wise and ethical use of resources.

2. Regular Giving and Charity: Engage in regular acts of generosity, such as tithing to your church, donating to charities, or helping those in need.

3. Ethical Investment and Spending: Make financial decisions that reflect moral and ethical values, avoiding investments in harmful industries.

4. Avoiding Debt and Living Within Means: Strive to live within your means and avoid excessive debt, practicing contentment with what you have.

5. Seeking Godly Counsel on Finances: Consult with wise, financially prudent individuals or advisors who can offer guidance based on biblical principles.

Let’s look at a few reflective questions to refine our true beliefs about money:

1. How do you balance the necessity of money with the call to not idolize it?

2. In what ways can you practice generosity and stewardship in your financial life?

3. How does trusting in God influence your attitude towards money and financial security?

4. What steps can you take to ensure your financial dealings are honest and ethical?

5. How can you cultivate contentment in a culture that often equates success with financial gain?

If you have any comments to share about your journey of navigating money and profit in a Christian way, we’d love to hear them. Your insights on balancing financial responsibilities with spiritual values can be a beacon for others.

As we conclude this issue, let us remember that our attitude towards money and profit should be one of stewardship, generosity, and trust in God. May we find the wisdom to use our resources in a way that honors God and benefits others, reflecting the values of the Kingdom we belong to.

"But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." - Matthew 6:33

Until next time,
