Guided by The Gospel – Issue 124 (Questions of Faith: Why Does God Tolerate Evil?)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,??

The existence of evil in a world created by a holy and sovereign God is one of the most challenging questions we can ask. Why does God tolerate evil if He is all-powerful and perfectly good? While scripture does not provide simple answers, it does offer profound truths that help us understand God’s purposes and our role in the face of evil. In Habakkuk 1:13, the prophet cries out, “Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; You cannot tolerate wrongdoing. Why then do You tolerate the treacherous?” This question is likely one that we have all wrestled with at some point.??

God’s tolerance of evil is not an endorsement of it. Instead, it reflects His patience and His ultimate plan for redemption. In 2 Peter 3:9, we are reminded, “The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” God allows time for repentance and the unfolding of His divine purposes, even when we struggle to see the full picture.??

Evil also serves as a backdrop against which God’s justice, mercy, and love are revealed. Through Jesus’ sacrifice, God has already provided the ultimate answer to evil—victory over sin and death. In Romans 8:28, Paul assures us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Even in the midst of evil, God is working to bring about His glory and our ultimate good.??

Practical Takeaway: What Does This Mean for Us? While we may not fully understand why God allows certain evils, we can trust His sovereignty and His promise to restore all things. Evil reminds us of our dependence on Him and our responsibility to stand against injustice. As followers of Christ, we are called to be agents of His love and light in a broken world. In Micah 6:8, we are called to “act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”??

Reflection and Challenge - Reflect on an area of the world or your life where you see the impact of evil. How can you respond in a way that reflects God’s justice, mercy, and love? Pray for strength to trust in God’s plan and to be a witness of His redemptive power.??
