Guided by The Gospel – Issue 121 (Questions of Faith: Where Did God Come From?)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“Where did God come from?” This question is as profound as it is natural. It challenges us to grapple with the very nature of God’s existence and what it means to call Him the Creator of all things. While human minds are bound by time and space, God exists outside those limits, transcending the framework of beginnings and endings. In Psalm 90:2, we read, “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” God’s eternal nature is one of the most humbling and awe-inspiring truths of the Christian faith.

God is uncreated and self-existent—two truths that set Him apart from everything else in existence. Everything we know has a beginning, but God simply is. He identifies Himself to Moses in Exodus 3:14 as “I AM WHO I AM.” This statement reveals not only God’s eternal nature but also His complete independence. Unlike us, He does not rely on anything or anyone for His existence.

When we struggle to comprehend this, we are reminded of the mystery of God. In Isaiah 55:8-9, He tells us, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways… As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Practical Takeaway: What Does This Mean for Us? Recognizing God as eternal and unchanging brings profound comfort. It means He is not subject to the unpredictability or decay that marks human life. His promises endure forever because His character never wavers. When we feel overwhelmed by the temporariness of this world, we can anchor ourselves in the truth that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

Reflection and Challenge - Take a moment this week to meditate on God’s eternal nature. Consider how His existence outside of time brings peace and stability to your life. What does it mean to trust in a God who never changes?

I’d love to hear from you. What questions about faith, God, or the Bible have you been pondering? Feel free to comment below or reply directly to this email with your thoughts or questions. DM if you prefer your question to remain anonymous.? Your input could inspire future issues in this series!
