A Guide to the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) for International Students in Canada

Studying in Canada is an exciting opportunity, but navigating the immigration requirements can be overwhelming. One key document international students need to be aware of is the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). While most students focus on securing their study permit, many overlook the importance of the TRV, which is essential for entering and re-entering Canada. Understanding how to obtain and maintain a valid TRV will ensure you avoid unnecessary travel headaches and focus on what truly matters—your studies and experiences in Canada.?

Who Needs a TRV??

A TRV is required if you are from a country that needs a visa to enter Canada. If your home?country is visa-exempt, you will need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead when?arriving by air. U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents of the U.S. do not need either a TRV or an eTA.?

Although you do not need a valid TRV while inside Canada, it is recommended to maintain one if you anticipate traveling outside the country. If your TRV expires while you are abroad, you will need to apply for a new one before returning, which can take time and potentially disrupt your studies.?

How to Get a TRV?

When Applying from Outside Canada: If you are applying for a study permit or a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) from outside Canada, a TRV is automatically issued upon?approval of your application. There is no need to apply for a separate TRV.?

When Applying from Within Canada: If you are renewing your study permit or applying for a PGWP while already in Canada, you must first receive your new permit before applying for a TRV. The TRV will typically be issued with an expiry date that matches your new study or work permit.?

It is best to apply for your TRV well in advance of any planned travel. Processing times vary, and delays can occur, especially if biometrics are required. Avoid booking non-refundable tickets until you have received your TRV.?

Traveling and Maintaining a TRV?

Leaving and Re-entering Canada: If you plan to travel outside Canada during your studies,?ensure your TRV or eTA is valid before you leave. If you hold a study permit but lack a valid?TRV, you may not be able to re-enter Canada until you obtain a new one.?

Traveling to the U.S.: In some cases, students may not need a valid TRV to re-enter Canada?from the U.S., provided they have a valid study or work permit and return within the authorized stay period. However, always confirm current regulations before traveling.?

Lost or Stolen Passport Containing a TRV: If your passport with a valid TRV is lost or stolen, you must first obtain a new passport before applying for a replacement TRV. When submitting your application, include a letter explaining the situation along with a police report number if applicable.?

Important Things to Keep in Mind?

Your TRV remains valid until its listed expiry date, regardless of any changes in your?immigration status (such as transitioning from a study permit to a PGWP). However, always?check the most up-to-date information on Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada?(IRCC) before making travel plans.?

Staying informed about your immigration documents is essential to ensure a smooth academic journey in Canada. Apply early, keep your documents valid, and plan your travels carefully to avoid disruptions to your studies.?
