Guide to Spooky Fruit
When my wife was in middle school, her mom threw such a Halloween party that her family still tells stories about today, almost 20 years later. Why was it so memorable? She used food as the centerpiece of her haunted house: blindfolded, each kid had to walk the line and put their hands in bowls of guts (sticky wet spaghetti), brains (jello molds), and eyeballs (skinned grapes) yuk! My wife still shivers when picking up grapes.?
For many people, October and Halloween time in particular, means indulging with candy and sweets but at The FruitGuys, we celebrate with spooky fruit. Have you ever tried a rambutan? ?It looks like a spider with hair tentacles (pro tip: peel it first). What about dragon fruit? Its striking pink peel looks like a dinosaur egg and inside reveals white and speckled flesh.?
Rambutan
It has soft hair-like spines and is easily peeled to reveal the grape-like fruit inside. It’s mildly sweet and refreshing taste is reminiscent of a lychee or a kiwi.?
Star Fruit
Star fruit is juicy and tastes like a sweet-tart mixture of lemons, pears, andgrapes. When ripe, its skin turns bright yellow. The entire star fruit is edible, including its occasional seeds.
Dragon Fruit
This tropical fruit is crisp with a slightly sweet, mild flavor. Its flesh (usually white but sometimes red) contains tiny black edible seeds. To eat, simply cut it in half and scoop out the insides with a spoon.
Passion Fruit
When ripe, the skin of this oval fruit is wrinkly and slightly soft to the touch. Its jelly-like, seedy flesh is fragrant, tart, and sweet. To eat, cut passion fruit in half and scoop out the jelly and edible seeds with a spoon.
Kiwano Melon
Also called the horned melon, Kiwano has jelly-like flesh with lots of small edible seeds. Its exciting flavor profile includes melon, cucumber, and lime. Just cut in half and squeeze or scoop out the fruit with a spoon.
Many of these spooky fruits are tropical and imported from Central America or Asia. Every so often we include them in our Harvest fruit mix boxes to give you a surprise.
