Guide to: how to read Chanel serial numbers
Since 1984, each Chanel bag has had a label with a serial number attached inside. In the classic 2.55 crossbody, it is located at the bottom left corner. The number of digits indicates the date of production. From 1986 to 2004, the numbers were 7-digits long. Older pieces have only six digits, while newer ones have eight. A 9-digit code indicates a counterfeit. Since 1999, the design of the label has remained virtually unchanged: a small sticker with numbers is covered by a larger transparent sticker with golden holographic flecks. It is almost impossible to remove it intact, unlike the cheap stickers often used in replicas. Pay attention to the font. On bags produced after 2000, zeros are always printed with a slash, and ones have short serifs at the top and bottom. These are pieces with 7-digit codes starting with 6, 7, 8, or 9, and all bags with 8-digit numbers. Finally, the number on the label should match the number on the plastic authenticity card.
Starting in April 2021, Chanel introduced a new method for authenticating their bags and wallets: the era of serial numbers and corresponding authenticity cards, which we have been accustomed to for decades, has ended. They are replaced by a microchip with all the authentication details of the bag in digital form.
