Be A Guide Not a Guru
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary a guru is
as in expert:?a person with a high level of knowledge or skill in a field
?- one of those weather gurus that the television networks always drag out whenever there's a big blizzard brewing
I don't know about you but the way they describe a guru being 'dragged out' doesn't really sound? to me?like gurus have such a great reputation.
But if the true definition is 'a high level of knowledge or skill in a field' then I'd wager we are ALL gurus in certain areas.
So why do we so often end up comparing ourselves to other people we see and put them on the 'guru' pedestal but play down our own 'guruness' (made up word but I like it!).
I think it comes down to good ole imposter syndrome and the 'not enoughness' nearly all of us feel to some degree.
Yet for me the title 'guru' smacks of grandiose masters surrounded by fawning servants, living elevated and unreachable lives.??
Out of touch and out of reach of the likes of me and you.
And I wonder, does anyone ever actually self-title themselves as a guru?
Or is that a badge we mere mortals ascribe to those people who have worked through their fears and self-doubts and followed through on their goals and dreams to get out there and do the thing they're good at?
One of my favourite YouTubers, Ali Abdaal says 'be a guide not a guru'.
When I first heard him say that I thought, wow, what a powerful reframe.
Here's what the dictionary says about the word guide:
NOUN
as in guard:?one that accompanies another for protection, guidance, or as a courtesy
-?followed our guide through the dangerous mountain trails
VERB
as in to steer:?to point out the way for (someone) especially from a position in front
?- would be happy to guide you folks to the historic part of town
Doesn't it feel so much less daunting to be a guide than a guru.
You see you don't have to be miles ahead of those you're trying to help.? You just have to be a few steps in front so that you can point out the way, protect them from the pitfalls you've learned from your own?experience and help guard them from the dangers you know are out there.

When you're a guide you lead from a place of service not from a place of ego.
You don't profess to have all the answers, you're simply offering to be their guide.?so they can discover the right path?for themselves.
Phew!
That's a big relief right?
So when I invite people to work with me I know that I don't have all the answers.?
I don't pretend to be 'all knowing'.
I offer to be their guide.
I just say let me guide you from the place?where I?am now, a few steps ahead of where you might want to be.? Let me help you avoid some of the mistakes and pitfalls that will likely cost you time, money and mental energy.
