A Guide to Discovering the Right Service or Product ?????

A Guide to Discovering the Right Service or Product ?????

I'm currently sitting in Mount Druitt library ??, reflecting on my week and thinking about how I can add a personal touch to a 4-step process that's helped me extend my service offering to the groups I've been working with. I'll share how I discovered it - the Double Diamond framework.

A friend and I were having a coffee ?, catching up and discussing what we're both up to. During the conversation, I found myself thinking, "Wtf am I even saying?" I often find it hard to articulate what I do and the product I'm building in a simplified manner, leaving bits of confusion in the air throughout the conversation.

I paused and started to break down my process on how I get a client from feeling overwhelmed to having full clarity of their journey ahead, freeing them time and understanding how to delegate accordingly. As I explained the product, my friend said, "Ahh, the Double Diamond method," and there it was - the framework, the gold, the knowledge, and wisdom to pass on.

So, here's the process:

Start with your 'Customer Avatar' ??

Who are you serving? A simple thought exercise is by thinking about those around you that you want to help and consider their demographics, interests, and pain points. This will help you tailor your offering to meet their specific needs.

Next step - the Double Diamond ????

The Double Diamond framework is a simple way to think about solving problems. It has four steps: Discover, Define, Develop, Deliver. The framework is visually represented by two diamonds, each representing a distinct phase of the design process.

  1. Discover: Write down their problems! Once you've identified your customer avatar, go deeper into their problems and challenges. This is the first phase, where the focus is on understanding the problem space. The goal is to identify opportunities and challenges without jumping to solutions.
  2. Define: Highlight the problems you think you can best solve and the ones you would like to focus on. In this phase, the insights gathered during the Discover phase are narrowed down to define a clear problem statement or challenge. This phase involves prioritising issues, setting objectives, and establishing the scope of the project.
  3. Develop: This is the ideation phase, the focus shifts to generating and prototyping potential solutions to the problems you've highlighted. This is a creative process, where ideas are tested, refined, and improved based on feedback and testing. Try them out and see what works.
  4. Deliver: The final phase is about choosing the best solution and putting it into action. This involves detailed design, production, and launch. The Deliver phase also includes evaluating the success of the solution against the objectives set in the Define phase.

Remember, #startwithprocess makes the journey a lot simpler when you can see the next steps forward. ???

Impressive insights, Ricky! The Double Diamond model indeed provides an effective structure to streamline decision making. I've observed how a clear understanding of customer's needs opens up several possibilities. In your experience, how often did you have to modify the course based on customer feedback during the development stage?

It is useful, it's important to adapt it to the specific context of your project. Not all steps may be equally relevant.
