This diamond earrings buying guide explains the key points to keep in mind when investing in this highly coveted and spectacular gem.  

Diamonds are categorized and valued according to the 4C criteria: Cut, Color, Purity, and Weight.

For diamonds greater than 0.50 carats in weight, it is advisable to add a fifth C to the previous 4C criteria, which refers to the Certification where the characteristics of the diamond and its authenticity are detailed.

Here we detail each of the value criteria to invest in diamonds and make no mistake.

DIAMOND SIZE AND SHAPE

The cut refers to the shape that the diamond acquires when we begin the work of cutting and polishing it. Remember that diamond is a rough stone; pure crystallized carbon is found and extracted in the world's diamond mines.

It begins to acquire value when we shape this rough diamond, carving it to achieve different formats and enhancing all its natural luminosity. Each shape that we give to the diamond has its own denomination.

The cut is the most crucial factor when buying a diamond. It depends on it that it generates a good sparkle and that the stone looks appropriately. Diamonds with excellent qualities have been depreciated for failing to cut. The cutter must know all the characteristics of the diamond. And cut it in a way that develops all its potentialities.  

Here we can observe the journey of light as it penetrates the diamond and how the different types of cuts affect this process. For example, a very deep cut will cause the light to be lost, and a very shallow cut will not make the diamond shine in all its splendor. 

From this, we see the importance of the size being excellent or good on the value scale.

DIAMOND COLOR

The color of the diamond is the next most important characteristic to consider when buying a diamond. Diamonds acquire more value when the color they have is none; that is, when the diamond is completely colorless, it is more valuable. If we appreciate yellow tones in diamonds, it means that their quality on the color scale is lower.

The color scale of diamonds is classified by letters, starting from D (totally colorless) to Z (brown).

When buying diamonds, we must know that everything must be in proportion. If the cut is poor and the diamond is of color D, that is to say, the best, it will be of no use to us. Our jewel will not look like it could, and we will be wrongly investing our money. However, if we buy a diamond with an Excellent cut and with a color F or G, it will be a good investment, and we will notice that our jewel looks excellent.

DIAMOND PURITY

When we speak of purity we refer to the imperfections and inclusions that we can find on the outside or inside of our diamond. The defects on the surface of the diamond are imperfections and on the internal inclusions. The vast majority are practically invisible to the human eye, visible less or more efficiently with a 10X magnifying glass. The fewer inclusions or imperfections in the diamond, the higher the grade it will acquire on the purity scale.

CARAT / GEM WEIGHT

There is a widespread error that relates the carat of a diamond to the size of the diamond. No. Carat refers to the weight of the diamond and not its size. Carats are also related to the size of the diamond. A diamond can weigh a lot in carats, but because of its size, it appears smaller.

Carats, which refer to weight, have a higher purchase price if they weigh closed measures, that is, if they weigh 0.25ct, 0.50ct, 0.75ct, or 1ct. For this reason, the jeweler will advise and try to buy diamonds to sell weighing 0.24ct or 0.49ct so that the customer invests in the most brilliant way possible and saves significant money.
