The Guidance of Others
As with many business executives, meetings are part of the structured process for communicating ideas, sharing updates and basically, an opportunity to take the pulse of the company’s health. Those of us who have the responsibility for developing the message know how difficult and time consuming this process can be. However, one of the elements I most look forward to is how I close the meetings. As I review the contents of what I am going to share with the team, I invariably recall those quotes which have guided me through my career. What’s most interesting and even at times surprising as I go through this exercise, is how much I rediscover their impact and the incredible diversity of sources. Some are from well-known business thinkers, while others come from sports figures, media personalities, historical figures and mentors. The key for me is finding the best match of a quote’s relevance to a meeting’s content and something for everyone to reflect upon as they go through their day. A perfect quote at the end of a meeting is like putting a time stamp on the messages shared in the meeting.
With a new year upon us, for many it will no doubt lead to a series of team meetings designed to set a vision, convey goals for the company and acknowledge recent achievements.
If you are one of the fortunate with the privilege of leading a team, sharing a quote which has guided you through your career may prove to be a positive influence in connecting and reinforcing your message, not only then but throughout the year as well. I find it surprising how in moments when I struggle to develop a message for the team I always find myself reflecting on a quote to guide me through. Since this article is about the guidance of others I’d like to share a few of the quotes which have guided me throughout my career and continue to do so. Should you feel so inspired, please feel free to share any quotes in the comments section which have inspired and guided you throughout your career.
