Guest blog: How I faced burnout and why mental health at work is crucial

In recent years, I was always the one giving 110% at work. I love my job, I love my colleagues, but somewhere along the way, I started losing myself. Instead of feeling proud of my achievements, I increasingly faced pressure, lack of understanding from superiors, and eventually, burnout. This seems to be a growing issue in many work environments.

When I realized I was on the path to burnout, I first tried to push through. The thought of leaving my colleagues in the lurch kept me going, but the cost was too high. As the situation at the company worsened, so did my symptoms of burnout. Despite taking a two-week vacation, during which I continued to work during the first week, I returned to work mentally and physically exhausted. In the end, I made the decision to step back and take care of myself.

I understand that burnout is a serious issue with long-term consequences. I am determined not to return to old patterns and to regain my work-life balance. Although guilt arose for taking sick leave, I am resolved to emerge from this experience stronger and better. My journey to recovery is still ongoing, but I know that without this decision, I couldn’t move forward.

My experience taught me the importance of having a healthy work environment where we feel supported and understood. Burnout is real and common, but it can be prevented with the right support and awareness. Therefore, I urge all leaders and HR professionals to continue raising awareness about the importance of mental health and to create positive work environments.

Employers play a key role in preventing burnout. Creating a supportive culture where employees feel valued, respected, and have opportunities for growth is essential. This includes open communication, flexibility regarding working conditions, and establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life.

Burnout is not a sign of weakness but a warning that it’s time to take care of yourself. More and more of us are facing similar challenges, and I am convinced that with greater awareness, support, and attention to mental health, we can create work environments where everyone can thrive. Together, we can transform workplaces into spaces where human health is prioritized, leading to greater productivity and employee satisfaction in the long run.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, I encourage you to take time to reflect and ask yourself how you can take care of yourself. Sometimes the hardest decision is to put yourself first, but it’s also the most necessary for long-term well-being and success.
