Guess Where the new UK Supercomputer will be Built....in a Parking Lot!

In a significant stride towards advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC), the UK is set to launch one of its most powerful supercomputers, Isambard-AI, at the University of Bristol in 2024. Funded by a substantial £225 million ($273 million) investment by the UK government, this project marks a pivotal moment in the nation's technological advancement.

The core of Isambard-AI's computational power lies in its 5,448 NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchips. These cutting-edge components represent a blend of NVIDIA's ARM-based Grace CPU and a Hopper-based GPU tailored for optimal power efficiency and performance in large-scale AI operations.

Despite its formidable computing capabilities, Isambard-AI breaks conventional supercomputing expectations in two significant ways: its remarkably low power consumption and its unique deployment location.

  • Power Efficiency: Contrary to supercomputers' traditionally high power demands, Isambard-AI is designed to operate under 5 megawatts (MW) of power. This level of energy efficiency is not just a breakthrough in reducing operational costs; it also aligns with broader environmental sustainability goals.
  • Deployment in a Parking Lot: In an unconventional move, Isambard-AI will be stationed in a parking lot at the National Composites Centre (NCC) in Bristol and Bath Science Park. This decision reflects an innovative approach to integrating such advanced technology into urban spaces, challenging the typical notion of supercomputing facilities requiring vast, dedicated spaces.

Technological and Environmental Considerations

  • Cooling System: Isambard-AI incorporates a sophisticated direct liquid-cooling system, part of the HPE Cray EX supercomputer design. This system enhances its energy efficiency and reduces the overall environmental impact.
  • Heat Re-use Model: A pioneering heat reuse model is being developed in collaboration with the University of Bristol. This model aims to repurpose the waste heat from Isambard-AI for heating local buildings, further contributing to the UK's Net Zero carbon efficiency targets.

Isambard-AI is not just a technological marvel; it's a testament to the evolving landscape of supercomputing. It challenges traditional norms with its energy-efficient operation and innovative deployment strategy.

we are building 100% solar powered GPU data centres in the UK and USA and we are looking for partners on the datacenter side to maximise profitability , our aim is to have 5000 Nvidia 4090s running with high speed fibre within the next 18 months . if anyone is interested in working with us on profit shares please let us know . Our first site is only 8 weeks away !

Absolutely fascinating insight! ?? It reminds me of what Steve Jobs once said, "Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower." The evolution of Edge AI and its footprint in supercomputing showcases the kind of forward-thinking that propels industries forward. ???? Let's keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible! #Innovation #EdgeAI #FutureTech

Edge AI, event smaller units of 4 x H200 GPU set ups will be part of the future AI infrastructure. Only by building these centres will the innovation and new tech be possible to deliver. Car parks are better spaces to utilise for these type of centres, than cars that might use the space for 50% of the time, as long as the GPUs are accessible for the innovators to try out experiments and test their ideas.
