Guard Yourself from False Idols

In his final words, John makes it crystal clear — you’re either with Christ or you’re with the world. But being a Christian isn’t just about having faith in your heart. Nope, John talks about the importance of understanding the doctrine of Christ.

And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life,” (1 John 5:20).

Wow, talk about a powerful declaration on the deity of Christ! John reminds us that eternal life isn’t just some prize we receive — it’s a deep, meaningful relationship with a God who has life within Himself.

There are three key things that define what it means to be a Christian. First and foremost, a Christian believes in Christ and has a deep, meaningful relationship with Him. But it’s not just about our relationship with God — a true Christian also loves their fellow believers, no matter what the cost. And last but certainly not least, we believe in the doctrine of Christ’s deity.

These three things are the foundation of our faith, the bedrock that helps us understand who we are and what we stand for. And when we hold true to these principles, we can be confident that we are living out our lives as true Christians.

“Little children, guard yourselves from idols,” (1 John 5:21).

And that, my friends, is the final warning from John. He cautions us not to make an idol of our faith, to be wary of false doctrines and man-made religion that can lead us astray. It’s not enough to simply believe in Christ — we must also obey Him and make Him our Lord.

After all, eternal life comes to those who have a true, authentic relationship with Jesus. So let’s be vigilant and guard against anything that might steer us off course. Lock false and man-made religion out of your life. Rather, focus on the one true gospel that’s been revealed to us, and avoid the road to hell at all costs. With Christ as our Lord and Savior, we can be confident that we’re on the path to everlasting life.
