A Guaranteed Way To Absolutely Improve Your Mental Health And Feel Great Now

One of the most detrimental aspects of the last two to three years has been the negative impact on our health and wellbeing. Specifically, in relation to our mental health with the erosion of one of our most fundamental basic needs. Human interaction and connection with others. Indeed, before the pandemic, it seems we were already experiencing massive disconnection due to the increase in communicating via gadgets and computers.

Social isolation is commonly used as a form of punishment in prisons

In the last two years, social isolation, whether through lockdown, lack of travel locally and internationally, means friends and families have spent much time apart. Furthermore, it is one of the most harmful things to do to humans. Indeed, solitary confinement has and still is used in prisons all over the world. However, it has been shown to increase health problems, heart disease, depression and cognitive decline.

This means a focused effort is required to ensure we take steps to counteract this damage to our mental health, confidence and self-esteem. Not only for ourselves and others, but for the sake of society and the health and robustness of our businesses.

Here are four simple yet critical steps you can take right now:

  1. Schedule more time to interact with other humans. This could mean planning a date night with your spouse, having a family day or catching up with friends. Sometimes, this takes a bit of effort and planning, which is often overlooked due to people being busy, tired or putting it off for yet another day. And of course, connecting with others is helpful for your state management, increases self-esteem, empathy and improves your immune system. Perhaps join a group or a team sport. Your consistent commitment becomes a ritual, and rituals build a sense of belonging, connection and certainty.
  2. Step out into the world and do a random act of kindness for another human. Gestures such as a simple smile at a stranger, paying forward a coffee for the next person or topping up a parking meter (if you can find one that still takes coins!) The simple act of helping another person will make you feel good about yourself. When I go out for my morning run, most mornings I see the same beautiful older lady out walking. She says hello to everyone she meets, smiles at them and wishes them a beautiful day. I can only imagine how this small act ripples out and impacts people's days.

Connecting with Nature

  1. Connect with nature. One of our greatest natural and free resources is taking time out in nature. Nature is a great healer, peace bringer, lesson giver and allows us to connect with the essence of ourselves. One of my favourite quotes is from Laurens Van Der Post:

"What wilderness does is to present us with a blueprint of what creation was about in the beginning. This blueprint is still there, and those of us who see it find an incredible nostalgia rising in us, an impulse to return and discover it again. Through wilderness, we remember, and are bought home again."

Discover who you are and embrace connecting with the essence of yourself

4. There has never been a better time to invest in yourself and connect with the true you. You are your greatest asses, and embarking on a journey of self-discovery, learning who you are, what you stand for and what is important to you will yield great riches. You just have to have courage and kindness to dig a bit deeper beneath the surface.

Finding someone to help you see yourself differently, to become aware of what drives you, what unconscious and perhaps, unhelpful patterns that still shape your life has the potential to be life changing.

When you do, you will gain clarity, confidence and be more aligned in what you think, feel and do. Above all, working on yourself and your mindset is the key to future-proofing your life against uncertain times, events outside your control and future challenges.

Increasing our sense of our worth and value is recognised as a proven and powerful way to build inner resilience

Or, what I call GRIT. With this inner strength, which you can develop, you have a powerful key to holding strong in times of adversity and challenges that appear in your world. Ultimately, helping you to perform at your best and be your very best.

Finally, if you are already doing all of the above, congratulations. Your positive impact will, for sure, ripple out to many others who sorely need it. And, if you would like to discover more about yourself, step into a journey of growth and exploration, then please reach out. I guarantee you will be glad you did!
