GSM Sunset in Germany, SIM cards < 1 Euro per year and 0 USD antennas

What's new in wireless IoT? GSM is being shut down in Germany, chip loop antennas cost 0 euros and IoT SIM cards sometimes cost less than 1 euro per year.

The era of GSM in Germany is coming to an end. Deutsche Telekom will shut down its GSM network in June 2028[1]. By the end of 2030, Vodafone will gradually shut down GSM. This will create white spots and grey spots for GSM[2]. This means that smart meters, alarm systems and many other IoT devices will go offline.

Are you prepared?

Afzal Thx for like. GSM has accompanied me for almost my entire working life. I was head of the Motorola workshop in Frankfurt. All Motorola phones under warranty were repaired there. After that, I managed the Ascom workshop in Frankfurt and repaired Ericsson's OEM GSM phones there. I was at the factory in Sweden. Ericsson and Motorola phones have disappeared. Ericsson and Motorola GSM modules too. GSM retires in July 2028. I retire in May 2027. I'll keep working then. GSM stops working. That's called evolution. UMTS or 3G went before that. NB-IoT and LTE-M are not as big as expected. And 5G applications with high data are rare. However, I see more opportunities with 5G NTN because there is a market and no competition.

David thx for like. I financed the construction of my house by selling GSM modules. I was the first employee of the first Telit distributor outside of Italy. The competition was Siemens. Siemens modules no longer exist. Telit is still around. However, over 50% of the market share is now held by Chinese cellular modules. Times have changed.

Andreas thx for like. I own the URL www.gsm-modem.de/m2m. GSM is dead. I had an ICU account with only 5 digists. Valuable and therefore stolen. Today ICU is worthless. I will keep GSM-modem.de and publish a review from 1995 to today. There have been setbacks. And it is repeating itself with 5G NR, 5G NTN and 6G.

Very sad. Here in USA there would be law suits to stop the shut down.
