GSA Finalizes Rule to Reduce Single-Use Plastic Packaging

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has finalized a rule to reduce single-use plastic packaging in products supplied through the Federal Supply Schedule (FSS). Effective July 8, 2024, this rule encourages contractors to identify and provide plastic-free packaging options, aligning with President Biden's Federal Sustainability Plan.

The FSS is a procurement program that simplifies the acquisition process for federal agencies, providing access to a wide range of pre-approved products and services. While the FSS primarily impacts domestic procurement, it also influences importation by setting sustainability standards that vendors must meet.

The GSA aims to help these agencies minimize their environmental footprint and reduce plastic waste in their supply chains by promoting sustainable packaging practices. This initiative supports broader efforts to phase out single-use plastics and foster a more sustainable federal procurement process.

The GSA's new rule marks a critical step towards a greener future, reflecting a growing commitment to environmental responsibility within federal operations.
