Guess who's back?

My account was restored after sending an appeal 5 times.

Happy to be back but honestly, feeling anxious about doing the wrong thing again.

I won’t be following people for a while now.

Cutting costs and becoming a cockroach

I wrote about it briefly last year, but I'd like to emphasize it one more time.

Becoming hard to kill and staying in the game for a long time is the way to go if you want to stay independent, minimize risk, and enjoy the unlimited upside that comes with randomness.

"The cheaper your company is to operate, the harder it is to kill." – Paul Graham

Earlier this year we migrated Best Writing to Cloudways hosting and kept upgrading our hosting plan, which got us to a $100+ monthly bill.

Then after some quick research, I found out you can rent cloud hosting really cheaply on Hetzner .

I'm not technical, so it was pretty intimidating to think of running and administering my own server.

Then a quick Google search for "host WordPress on Hetzner" led me to SpinupWP, which basically adds a layer on top of your cloud server and allows you to host as many WP sites as you like.

It's also reasonably priced.

Is it scalable?

Here's what SpinupWP says:

"In our benchmarks, we've shown that with page caching you can serve up to 750 concurrent requests with an average response time of 120 milliseconds with just a 1 GB / 1 shared CPU server. While we wouldn't recommend pushing your server to these kinds of limits, it goes to show that you can serve a lot of cached pages with very few resources."

After moving Marketful and having zero issues, I decided to move Best Writing to SpinupWP + Hetzner as well.

Hosting costs before:

  • €96.15/mo
  • €1,153.8/year

Hosting costs after:

  • €25.99/mo
  • €311.88/year

Savings per year: €841.92.

Reduced costs to expose ourselves to unlimited upside!
