Have you ever had one of those days where your to-do list feels like it's stretching on forever? I’ve definitely been there—caught in a cycle of checking off small, unimportant tasks just to feel like I’m making progress, all while the real work gets pushed to the back burner. That’s where the concept of the Most Important Task (MIT) comes in, and it has helped me identify what must be done.
It's that one task that, if you get it done, will make the biggest difference in moving you toward your goals. It’s the email you’ve been dreading to send, the report you’ve been procrastinating on, or the creative project you need to dive into. Whatever it is, your MIT is the task that should take centre stage in your day.
Why Focusing on Your MIT is So Powerful
I’ll admit, I used to fall into the trap of thinking that staying busy meant I was being productive. I’d answer emails, check off small tasks, and attend meetings—only to end the day feeling like I hadn't made any real progress.
Then, I started practising the MIT method. As part of my morning routine, I’d ask myself, "What is the one thing I can do today that will have the biggest impact on my goals?" I began time-blocking that task, and it was a total shift. The distractions and small tasks didn’t magically disappear, but I felt in control again—like I was steering the ship rather than getting tossed around by the waves.
Here’s a simple plan to get you going:

"Success is not the result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire." – Arnold H. Glasow. This quote always reminds me that success doesn’t just happen—you have to take action every day, even when it’s hard.
What is one task you can commit to finishing today that will bring you closer to where you want to be a year from now?
Focusing on your Most Important Task can truly change the way you approach your day. When you start giving your MIT the attention it deserves, you’ll notice a shift—not just in your productivity but in how purposeful you feel. It’s like moving from just being busy to being intentional. Try it out, and I’d love to hear how it goes for you!
