Growth, joy, and a new summer reading list

Growth, joy, and a new summer reading list

When Brené Brown first spoke at the Texas Conference for Women, she shared this insight and challenge: “I used to live by a quote I have on a little paperweight at home that says ‘What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?’

“I don’t think that’s a daring greatly way to live,” she added. “I think the daring greatly quote is ‘What’s worth doing even if you fail?’

Because if we’re not willing to be vulnerable, if we’re not willing to fail, we can’t grow and learn and love.”? In that spirit, this month we are focusing on the joy of sparking new friendships and cultivating growth mindset cultures — drawing on insights from two exceptional Conferences for Women speakers: psychologist Marisa Franco and professor of psychology and brain sciences Mary C. Murphy.

We're also drawing inspiration from the fact?that July is Disability Pride Month. To celebrate, we've curated a list of great reads by, about, and for people with disabilities. (Including the amazing Marlee Matlin, Academy Award-winning actress and recent Conferences for Women keynote speaker!) We hope they inspire you!

Does Your Workplace Have a Growth Mindset Culture?

“Growth mindset culture is the next frontier of the mindset movement,” says Mary C. Murphy, Ph.D., professor of psychological and brain sciences at Indiana University and founder and CEO of the Equity Accelerator.? “Growth mindset cultures communicate that ability and talent are things we can develop and expand with good strategies, persistence, measured risk-taking and learning from our mistakes.” To learn more, including four mindset triggers, read the article.?

Great Reads for Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month commemorates the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. This landmark legislation was pivotal in breaking down barriers and ensuring greater access and inclusion for people with disabilities. To help celebrate, we’ve put together a list of books you can add to your summer reading list, featuring authors and stories that reflect the rich and diverse experiences of the disability community (including recent CFW keynote and award-winning actress Marlee Matlin!)
