Surviving the Healthcare Overload: A Leader’s Guide
In the fast-paced healthcare industry—whether it’s Revenue Cycle Management, Payment Processing, Digital Transformation, or AI adoption—the pressure to keep up can feel overwhelming. With limited resources, it often seems like there’s always more to do than time, manpower, or dollars can allow. The day becomes a constant race to put out the hottest fires, leaving little time for the strategic leadership needed to guide your company, division, or team toward its “Promised Land.”
A Quantum Leap in Healthcare
We sometimes forget how far the healthcare industry has come in the last 15-20 years. It’s transformed from a faith-based, local effort into a high-tech, multibillion-dollar enterprise. Reflecting on this, I think about my grandfather’s generation. Born in the early 20th century, he entered the workforce during the Great Depression. He lived through two world wars, the space race, a man landing on the moon, the rise of personal computers, and the advent of the cell phone. Are we witnessing similar leaps of change in business today?
Harnessing Technology’s Power Without Losing Focus
As managers, thought leaders, and C-suite executives, how do we incorporate and leverage technology for its Highest and Best Use (HBU) without becoming overwhelmed? How do we avoid getting lost in the forest of innovation while staying focused on our own corporate tree—and the objectives that drive success: top-line revenue and market share growth? That’s what I want to explore in this article.
Bridging Generations in a World of Innovation
I often reflect on discussions with my grandfather, a successful businessman and college graduate. Despite his accomplishments, he often asked me to explain the latest technological advances. Even with early retirement, he found it hard to keep up with rapid innovation. Today, I see my generation facing similar challenges. We rely on younger generations for their insights and recommendations, often in subtle ways, so as not to appear out of touch—or worse, outdated. How do we adopt new technologies to solve big challenges without falling behind?
Experience as the Key to Overcoming Familiar Challenges
With age comes experience, and with experience comes the recognition that many of today’s challenges aren’t entirely new. While the players and resources may change, the core objectives remain: doing more with less, driving top-line revenue, improving automation, and positioning ourselves and our companies as thought leaders and innovators in our industry.
The Power of Getting the Right People on the Bus
One of the most influential books on leadership I’ve read is From Good to Great by Jim Collins. If you haven’t read it yet, I highly recommend picking it up over the Thanksgiving holiday. Collins shares invaluable lessons on leadership and sustainable success, and one concept that resonated with me is the idea of the “Big Bus.” Great leaders don’t try to be the smartest person in the room. Instead, they identify the right people—those with unique, God-given talents—and form a strong team with the skills needed to drive the company forward. As Aristotle said, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts."
Elon Musk shares a similar philosophy when it comes to empowering his teams: “You give people the power to succeed or fail without fear of reprisal.” (Source) This approach fosters innovation and encourages risk-taking, knowing that failure is simply part of the learning process.
Innovation and Teamwork: A Lesson from Apollo 13
The Big Bus team concept was brilliantly illustrated in Ron Howard’s movie Apollo 13. The team came together to solve complex problems and bring the astronauts safely home. They didn’t rely on one person; they leveraged the collective strengths of everyone involved, innovating and adapting at the necessary speed to ensure success.
Stepping Back to Bring the Right People Onboard
When you, as a senior leader, begin to feel overwhelmed by the speed of business, it might be time to step back. Open the door to your corporate bus and invite in the talented and gifted individuals who can help you move forward. Just as Collins’ wisdom teaches us, by getting the right people on the bus with you, we can transition from good to great.
Wishing You a Blessed and Glorious Thanksgiving
