Growing Your Sport: How NGBs Can Leverage NIL Deals to Engage the Next Generation
National Governing Bodies (NGBs) are tasked with growing their sports, developing talent pipelines, and keeping future generations engaged. As the NIL era unfolds, NGBs have a new opportunity to leverage college athletes as ambassadors—not only for organizational benefit, but for the sport’s overall growth.
For younger players, college athletes are often more tangible and relatable role models than professionals. They’re closer in age, compete at a level that feels attainable, and often come from similar backgrounds, having navigated youth sports systems recently themselves. Whether kids are watching them at a nearby university, following them on social media, or meeting them at events, these NCAA standouts feel like an accessible “next step.” Particularly when they stay local, college athletes can become community icons—symbols of success within reach. By harnessing these strengths through NIL deals, NGBs can create lasting connections that benefit both college athletes and the broader community.
Why College Athletes Are Key Ambassadors for NGBs
Positioning college athletes as ambassadors can elevate youth engagement, broaden the sport’s visibility, and foster long-term growth. Here’s how:
Activation Ideas for NGBs: Engaging Youth Through NIL Partnerships
Youth Camps and Clinics
Bringing in college athletes as guest coaches is a great way to teach skills, share personal stories, and provide young participants with an authentic glimpse of collegiate sports life. This can be enhanced by the college athlete sharing behind-the-scenes social media content that forges a deeper connection between campers, athletes, and the sport.
Meet-and-Greet Events
Organizing autograph sessions or Q&As at local youth tournaments generates excitement by allowing younger players to connect with accomplished college athletes and learn about the college experience. Promoting these gatherings through social media and athlete channels maximizes attendance and buzz.

Social Media Takeovers and Collaborations
Arranging takeovers gives college athletes the chance to showcase big moments or daily routines. Posting jointly on both the NGB’s and the athlete’s platforms amplifies outreach to a broader audience.
Youth Ambassador Programs
Creating a formal program in which college athletes serve as official representatives in their communities—appearing at games and local schools—establishes them as role models for rising players. In turn, these ambassadors promote NGB initiatives, competitions, and resources in an authentic way.
Inspiring Storytelling
Collaborating with athletes to document their journeys from youth participants to college competitors provides valuable insight into the process of athletic development. Sharing these stories on the NGB’s website, social media, or at youth events lays out a clear roadmap for young athletes aiming to follow in their footsteps.
Intangible ROI for NGBs: Benefits Beyond Engagement
NGBs that partner with college athletes enjoy returns that stretch beyond immediate engagement metrics:
Seizing the NIL Opportunity for Sport Growth
For NGBs, NIL isn’t as much about revenue as it is an opportunity to cultivate a robust, long-lasting fan base. College athletes provide an approachable blueprint that resonates with young players, inspiring them to persevere in the sport. In the NIL era, embracing college athletes as genuine ambassadors can guide and energize the next generation of participants.

3 周Great article, Michelle! This is such a huge area of opportunity, but can become a challenge for many NGBs because it's so easily complicated with legal hoops. Many NGBs have complex, multi-faceted athlete contracts for their senior athletes that include NIL deliverables, but nothing below that for up and comers that aren't vying for Olympic rosters and direct athlete support. I would bet many NGBs would benefit from a "How to do a basic NIL deal" type guide that suggests the simplest possible terms to engage with a college-age athlete. Does a resource like that currently exist?
