Growing up in a Matrilineal Society: Balancing Tradition and Modernity in Papua New Guinea

Growing up in a matrilineal society but raised in my dad's village, I've always felt the weight of cultural obligations on my shoulders. On my maternal side, I own land and resources, and while responsibilities exist, they don't compare to the expectations from my paternal family. But as the world changes, so do we.

I've come to realize that while honoring traditions is important, it shouldn't come at the expense of our own well-being. As Melanesians, community is ingrained in our DNA, but in today's world, we must prioritize filling our own cups first.

Becoming a mother highlighted this for me. Cultural obligations often led to financial strain, and saving wasn't something I grew up accustomed to. But I knew I wanted to break this cycle for my children's sake.

Enter online opportunities. It wasn't an overnight success story. I was skeptical, inexperienced, and fearful of stepping out of my comfort zone. But after 3 months of trial and error, learning and being coached, I got the hang of it. When you are desperate for change, you will make oppurtunities work for your WHY.

Now, as a single mom of three, running a full-time online business from the comfort of my home, I can confidently say it's been a game-changer. Not only am I meeting my financial goals and savings targets, but I also have the flexibility to fulfill my cultural obligations without the added stress.

My message to fellow PNG professionals, especially women, is this: we can achieve both. We can honor our traditions while embracing modern opportunities. It's not about changing our culture but adapting to thrive in today's world.

So, if you're like me, juggling endless responsibilities and yearning for financial freedom, I encourage you to explore the world of flexible online opportunities you can do as part time hustle around you full time job or do full time eventually. It's empowering, liberating, and it can open doors you never thought possible.

Let's rewrite the narrative, one online venture at a time. Together, we can shape a brighter future for ourselves and the generations to come.

My name is Aileen, and I come from the beautiful village of Buka in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. I am an everyday woman facing the same challenges you face. But I made a choice to take a chance and change my life. I strongly believe with determination and the right opportunities; we can overcome anything.
