“Good morning, Mrs. Cleaver. My, you look lovely today. I must say that Mr. Cleaver is one lucky man!”
Looking back at my life, I realize how lucky I was to grow up with the family I had. If you ever saw the television show Leave It to Beaver, that was my life (except I was more like the wise guy character, Eddie Haskell, than “The Beave” or his older brother, Wally).
My dad was a worker at a John Deere factory. My mother was a lab technician at a local hospital. They instilled in us values of honesty, love of God and church, and love for each other.
I have found that the values and habits my parents taught us we carried on in our lives into adulthood.
And they have served us well.
If You Have to Ask, the Answer Is Probably “No”
I have relied on those teachings in my business career. I have always tried to do the right thing in my dealings with co-workers, competitors and customers. Today, running my company for over 20 years, I insist my employees conduct themselves in the same way.
The core values we rely on in our company can be easily summarized: Always do the right thing. All the time.

And I am confident I have passed on these values to my employees. In fact, I don’t expect my employees to run to me every time they have a question or concern whether they are doing the “right thing.” As I have told them repeatedly, if you are asking yourself the question, “Is this the right way to handle this problem/question/concern?” the answer is probably “no.”
