I spent ten years coaching cross country, a few years at Grove City High School, and a few more at Sharon High School. During those ten years, I tried to keep a few fundamental principles in mind.....
- Talk with each team member daily. A conversation shows you care.
- There may be fear when trying something new or out of the comfort zone. Be supportive.
- Know what their goals are. Goals vary. Be aware of theirs.
- Share your goals and expectations and how they relate to what they want to accomplish.?
- Devise realistic training /development plans for each individual. Realistic plans results in the most significant growth.
- Provide regular feedback based on training and performances. Adjustments are often needed to even the best plans.
- Demonstrate equitable support to all team members. Roles and talents of individuals vary, but all are important in reaching group goals.
- Be enthusiastic about what you do. It is contagious.
- Allow time to live outside your program. A well-rounded life is important.
- Celebrate successes. Have fun.
The principles resulted in a 400% participation increase at both schools. Similar principles can help most organizations improve and grow.

1 个月I saw the uniforms first and said - I might be in this picture. Sure enough, there I am. You were the first actual coach that I had and still one of the best. Thank you for your leadership, even to a gawky 8th grader like me.
