The Growing Impact of AI in the Technology industry

Introduction?

“Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the part of computer science concerned with designing intelligent computer systems, that is, systems that exhibit characteristics we associate with intelligence in human behavior – understanding language, learning, reasoning, solving problems, and so on.”? - (Barr & Feigenbaum, 1981)?

?

If you’ve not yet had the opportunity to have a play around with ChatGPT3 we would recommend it.??

Scary and exciting in equal measures, it’ll give you an insight into the direction that AI is heading.??

Human

ChatGPT is a Natural Language Processing (NLP) model that is aiming to revolutionise the way we communicate. It was released on December 1, 2022 and created by OpenAI and caused an internet storm.??

Powered by Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence it learns how to converse with humans by recognising the context of conversations and is designed to understand natural language and react accordingly to it.??

This may all sound like something we’ve heard before, after all, the Turing Test of Artificial Intelligence where a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human, has been surpassed many times over.??

So, what’s all the fuss over???

Firstly, the ability to answer factual questions e.g. How tall is Mount Everest doesn’t really provide anything we haven’t seen before. Most of our phones can answer questions posed to it with a reasonable degree of accuracy within seconds thanks to Siri/Alexa.??

However, ChatGPT takes this further. Its ability to understand questions and provide human readable responses includes abilities such as answering GCSE exam questions to a low A grade. (See here if you’re interested:?

This is great, but other than helping students cheat their teachers to make their grades better, is there any use for this technology outside the realms of questions and answers? Chatbots are already being used by several organisations as a first line response to online queries. ChatGPT has the ability to learn from previous interactions and makes significant strides to improving that interaction - as a result you can expect to see this improvement or an increase in use amongst organisations with a customer facing element.??

Again - this doesn’t represent anything above an improvement to what we’ve all come to expect. However, what we’re seeing with ChatGPT is the ability for it to come up with genuinely helpful ideas or responses.?

?

For example, you can ask ChatGPT to give you a list of ideas for cooking with a few ingredients, then after you choose an item, ask for a shopping list, and then follow up with asking it to provide cooking instructions. As ChatGPT has the ability to remember and build upon the previous interactions, it all feels like a smooth and seamless process - intuitive and simple. The example might be quite contrived, but shows the potential as a useful engine running behind other user based applications or mobile apps.??

Another example would be for a journalist or blogger, where you can get ChatGPT to write your article (like I’ll be doing here) - and you can steer interactions and it will learn as you go along. It’s worth bearing in mind that one of the abilities of ChatGPT is that the style of responses are tailored to the style of question being asked. An informally asked question gives an informal response. Ask it formally, or ask it specifically to respond in a certain style and it kindly obliges.??

So how good is it???

One of the questions on the landing page was “How do I make an HTTP request in Javascript?” - this naturally piqued my interest - perhaps there were some useful functions that could be provided by ChatGPT. The results were astonishing. Not only did it provide code, but I could ask ChatGPT to modify and add to it so that I could see that this wasn’t just a generic code block, it was actually writing the code from a loose specification that I was providing.??

It also has the ability to not only write code but to:?

?

  • Write code from test data?
  • Write unit tests?
  • Re-write code more efficiently?
  • Re-write code in different languages?

?

Ignoring for now the legal implications, you can imagine the potential in diagnostics across many industries, for example problems with your car, or diagnosing healthcare issues, and even finding bugs in your code.?

?

All of this is leading towards a paradigm shift - and we’ve only touched the surface of Natural Language Processing. The possible applications for Artificial Intelligence across industry is really opening up now and these are no longer the realms of science fiction, or the possibilities of what might be. As a result, we cannot ignore the impending, direct impact on Industry. Google apparently have issued a “Code Red” over widespread speculation that it could potentially revolutionise several industries and might even replace tools like Google’s search engine with its ability to understand and generate human-like responses to a range of queries:??

?

Now is the time for us as an Industry to embrace AI; to begin to understand its benefits so that its value can be used by us in Industry. It’s time for us to evolve - and if we choose not to out of inability or fear, then we should understand that we’re on the brink of extinction.??

When even the mighty Google are rocked by the abilities of ChatGPT - we should all sit up and pay attention. It’s worth noting that most of us have only been exposed to the experimental / development release of ChatGPT3.?

?

Now that our eyes have been opened, we need to ensure that as individuals and as an industry we are preparing to enter a new age: The Age of AI.??

How will AI impact the IT industry in the next 5 years???

It is difficult to predict exactly how AI will impact different industries over the next 5 years, as the rate of adoption and impact of AI can vary significantly between industries. However, it is likely that AI will continue to be integrated into a wide range of industries, including healthcare, finance, education, transportation, and manufacturing, among others. In these industries, AI may be used to improve efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making, as well as to automate various tasks.?

In healthcare, for example, AI may be used to analyze medical images, assist with diagnosis, and personalize treatment plans. In finance, AI may be used to analyze market trends, identify fraudulent activity, and assist with financial decision-making. In education, AI may be used to personalize learning experiences and to optimize the allocation of resources. In transportation, AI may be used to optimize routes, improve safety, and reduce the number of accidents. In manufacturing, AI may be used to optimize production processes and to improve quality control.?

We know ChatGPT can create new code but another useful function of ChatGPT is debugging existing code (or even code that it’s created itself). Any programmer will tell you that debugging – the process of finding and correcting errors – is often a laborious process that requires checking large amounts of code to work out what’s gone wrong. According to those who are already using it to help with coding, not only can ChatGPT automate this process, but it can also explain why?the code isn’t working.

Overall, it is expected that AI will continue to transform a wide range of industries in the next 5 years, and it will likely play an increasingly important role in many areas of business and society.?

?

How will AI be used in the IT Industry?

?There are many potential uses for AI in the IT industry. Some examples include:?

  1. Automation of IT tasks: AI can be used to automate a wide range of IT tasks, including data entry, data analysis, and troubleshooting. This can improve efficiency and reduce the need for manual labor.?
  2. Predictive maintenance: AI can be used to analyze data from IT systems and predict when maintenance or repairs will be needed, allowing IT professionals to proactively address potential issues.?
  3. Cybersecurity: AI can be used to detect and respond to cyber threats in real-time, improving the overall security of IT systems.?
  4. Customer service: AI can be used to assist with customer service inquiries, allowing IT companies to respond to customer inquiries more quickly and efficiently.?
  5. Software development: AI can be used to assist with the development of software, including by generating code and identifying bugs.?

Overall, AI has the potential to significantly impact the IT industry and transform the way that IT professionals work.?

Will these new developments in AI affect my every day work life? ?
