Growing future minds
The big question of "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is no longer THE question to ask.

Growing future minds

When you were young, were you asked: "What do you want to be when you grow up?". Your options were probably what society told you was acceptable- fireman, doctor, lawyer, mechanic, bookkeeper, driver, chef, sales rep, or possibly to follow in the footsteps of your parents by taking on the same career choice that they did.

What if you were asked the question differently? What if what you asked was: "How do you want to contribute to the world when you grow up?".

I recently watched a video posted by Vishen Lakhiani, founder and CEO of MindValley. He talks about how 45% of the jobs that currently exist will no longer be in the future. We will rely heavily on technology, but that there are so many new/alternate opportunities for our children - not to have a "job" but to actually make a contribution and a difference in the world.

I found his words inspirational and this gave me a different perspective as a parent to a young child. It has inspired me to have different conversations with my son, conversations that have opened his mind to the possibility that, instead of being a veterinarian, he could develop a program or a robot which can operate on small animals with dental problems (there is a very scarce skill in our country).

Take a few minutes to watch this inspirational talk...it might change your perspective as well.
