Growing Edible Fish at Home

Growing Edible Fish at Home

Introduction

Growing edible sea fish at home.

Any sea fish could be cultivated at home provided if one has at least 2 cubic metres of Basin. Otherwise it is not commercially or for personal usage viable.

Problem: Salinity has to be 3%. It is risky on areas where ground water is pure in case leak occurs . But no problem up to 200 metres away from sea where ground water is saline.

In ground with fresh water following fish could be cultivated:

  1. Fresh water Prawns
  2. Edible river fish
  3. Fresh water lobsters/ crabs
  4. Fodder for fish-cultivation all other non edible fresh water fish could be cultivated in mass scale. Demand fodder fish for edible-fish breading is increasing. They could be deep frozen according to plan or dried.

One stone two fruits

Soil is becoming expensive and one must save without letting it being carried away by Rain. Soil will have high demand for construction and more for shelf and roof agriculture.

The tanks could be made having 2x2 m. Depth is ok if 2 metres, too. Then it is beginning of professional level. The soil taken must be put into pots depth 25cms and sides 20 cms. Such pots are good for Okra, beans, brinjals, tomatoes and similar. But the tanks depth can be 1 metre if one has rocks or hard Kabuk underground. The tank must get a net lid, for, children might fall in and birds will eat the fish. Snakes may visit. Have thalagoya and cats.

One can have minimum 1 cubic metre for a pair of fish to lay eggs to get tinies for commercial fish breading or to bread fodder fish that breads fast. All fish could frozen or dried according to plan. Normally three months maturity.

One needs many tanks if one wanted to practise commercially. Because if three months the maturity, one needs at least one maturing tank per week. That comes to 12 tanks cycle. They can be one above the other. In Berlin they are doing on roof of a ten floor building. It saves space. Otherwise for the beginning put the tanks and the soil dug out should be used to fill pots to be shelfed for agriculture above the tank. That will be lot of pots at 2x2x2 tank. 800 pots. A fence of 2m height can have 4 pots one above the other with 25 cms height difference between them. Good for tomatoes or brinjals and such cultivars.

That becomes: Fish + Vegets.

Sea Shore aqua culture solves many problems with one grip. They have very low investment provided Coast conservation Dep’t permits. I’ll write to you in detail tomorrow. But for now I explain as suspended and anchored net/gitter cages. The fisher Folk don’t rob one another. They seldom do, then it comes to bloody murder. I experienced one in Jaffna as a child. Therefore, the cultivation can spread into the open sea. Cages could be suspended to harvest daily. Then one needs about 100 cages. It comes to about ? acre. Or in an acre of water near about 1000 cages. The cages can be of Nylon for small fish-cultivar or prawns. Crabs and Lobsters need plastic gitter net-cages.

Ones the cultivation begins, the force of the waves falls. Coast will begin to grow. Besides the ocean is hungry and does not have extra fish to leave fossils that grow coasts. Cultivating fish allows natural fish to multiply and leave fossils. In the same time predators will increase.

For secured cultivation constructions of tanks 2x2 m is good. The depth can adapt to the available soil depth and does not need water tight construction. The bottom can be free. The walls should be made out of 25mega pascal strong polygonal hollow (triangular or hexagonal and not quadrilateral) blocks with slit to interlock. They don’t need cement pasting. They blocks should be replaceable. The blocks triangular or hexagonal should make at least 20 cms of wall-breadth. Net Lid is important to keep birds at bay. This type of construction could be good for municipal revenue at six months basis. Otherwise the cultivation could not be upgraded. Both in the water and coast should not be leased for more than six months. The mistake done with the jungles with cultivation is not reversible. The lesson should be applied to coastal farming.

At the coast the increasing of cages as reward comes should be in groynes going into the sea. When the depth increases light material cages with fibreglass or even framed net cages have to be used. Bottom will be netted too.

 Advantages:

  1. Stops immediately coastal erosion
  2. Promising future for youth (School failures) School failures are mostly strong. They fail studies because their body is fidgety. That does not allow to sit and study. But they good foe manuel work.
  3. Releases pressure on Marine wild-life.
  4. Supply of fossils to the coast as marine wild life increases.
  5. Stops Elephant human war. Youngsters could be diverted towards marine professions than letting them quarrel at the jungle fringes.
  6. Sea villages have become vogue. Amsterdam is building beautiful floating houses. America has opened an institute for marine living. The boys can learn to make floating houses as they do planned fish cultivation. There will be no idle time.
  7. Fish farming estates will overtake Tea and Coconut industry together.
  8. Fish industry has no pollution whatsoever.
  9. Through half yearly auction renting the municipality has secured revenue to continuously upgrade systems of cultivations. It should never go to private ownership.
