Some of our best nurses are leaving for the greater prospects that exist in the NHS. We have trained them and significantly aided their personal development in clinical and leadership terms. They are outstanding Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialists. So, why am I not concerned that they are leaving?
I am sad that are leaving as I think they are outstandingly caring, kind and compassionate nurses who reflect the values that we live by in the hospice. And we have an avalanche of evidence, in the form of thank you letters and cards, that patients and families who have been fortunate enough to experience their outstanding care will have been very grateful for what they have done for them. But I fully respect the fact that they have decided to move on to better themselves – having given of their best here for some years.
In their new roles it will quickly be apparent that they are outstandingly capably nurses and that can only enhance the reputation of the hospice from where they were recruited. They will be our best ambassadors. This reinforces my view that it’s better to train people and they leave than not train them and they stay!
