The Power of 2 Minutes - Daily Motivation #309 ( 21st April 2024)
A healthy dose of competition can be a powerful motivator in the workplace. However, when competition turns into unhealthy rivalry, it can create a toxic environment and hinder everyone's success.
My personal experiences with job rivalry and how I learned to navigate these situations productively.
Early in my career, I joined a company managing investments for various businesses.
The team boasted several colleagues from prestigious MBA programs. While I did my MBA from the Top 20 best MBA institutes, I was hungry to learn and prove myself. However, these colleagues, despite receiving top compensation packages, seemed to hoard the most exciting projects.
This fueled a competitive spirit within me
I knew I needed to find a way to stand out. Instead of dwelling on frustration, I started focusing on areas my colleagues might not be interested in. I took on challenging, unique projects that required different skill sets. Over time, my hard work and initiative were recognized, and I eventually became the lead manager, with those very same colleagues reporting to me.
This rivarly experience taught me that can be a catalyst for growth, pushing you to reach beyond your comfort zone and develop new skills and not used for negative sense and focus on your career advancement only.
Not all workplace rivalries have positive outcomes.
In another example, an employee, Ravi, got a new colleague, Kays in his team, mentoring him and sharing his expertise. Kays initially expressed admiration for Ravi's career path. However, their dynamic shifted as Kays became increasingly competitive. He started undermining Ravi's work and questioning established processes. Ravi, initially hesitant to let competition hinder their relationship, eventually stopped offering support. This ultimately harmed both of them, as Kays struggled without guidance, and the team's overall productivity suffered.
